2017 Open Gym Expectations: Another area to consider when

2017 Open Gym Expectations:
Another area to consider when players look to improve their production as a player in our basketball program is
competing in game situations.
We believe when we consistently play the “right way” we have a better chance of winning the game. We have
consistently taught our players to run the floor hard looking for a good early shot, then execute an offense where the
ball moves and players move and players keep proper spacing. We teach the understanding of a good shot versus a bad
shot. We teach the players when and who are expected to go for an offense rebound and when they are to get back on
defense. We teach our man to man defensive rules for dribble penetration, ball screens, down screens, cross screens
etc, post defensive rules etc… these are the things we try to master when we play in a five on five situation.
The way we should play should be the same in an open gym game, a summer league game, a varsity game, a JV game, or
a state tournament game. Players will have the opportunity during open gym to practice how they play. The games can
be really good when more players are focused on playing the “right way.”
Coaches and captain candidates will be there encouraging everyone to play the right way.
Here is the information on open gyms:

Please arrive promptly by 8:00pm.
Teams selected by 8:10pm and games started.
Games played to 11 by twos and threes win by 2.
To win the game player must make a free throw “to prove it.” Winning basket doesn’t count if the FT is missed.
There is a winners court and a losers court. Winners move “up” a court, losers move “down” a court. The
number of courts depends on the number of teams. Hopefully we have enough players for six teams.
Each night you will keep track of your wins and losses and record them. Winning percentage should improve the
more you play the “right way,” and the “more tough-minded serious athletes a team has who are willing to put
the team first.”
It is important to practice playing the right way with your teammates, and holding your teammates accountable for
playing the right. Open gyms offer a great opportunity for leadership to shine. The more guys we have showing
leadership, the more we will play the right way. The more we play the right way the more competitive the games are.
The more competitive the games are the more we improve and the more fun we have. It all starts with attitude and
leadership followed by great effort.
As part of the tryout process we will look for leadership and look for players playing the right way.
We believe improvement is a result of effort. Are you willing to put in the effort to improve your ability to play the “right
way?”
