For the first time in a major show ring across the world the Speckle Park breed was acknowledged as the interbreed supreme award winner. Earlier sashed supreme beef bull of the show, Six Star Premier, an 18-month-old Speckle Park bull, exhibited by Greg Ebbeck, Six Star Speckle Park, Bundanoon and Injaaz Farms, Dubai, firmly held the judges attention throughout the day. Sired by Six Star Rare Commodity and from Six Star Pho-Finish G250, Premier weighed in at 755 kilograms, exuding a powerful presence in the show ring. All three cattle judges, Greg Ball, Grenell Charolais, Singleton, Derek Hayward, Premier Cattle Company, Cambridge, NZ, and Ian Durkin, Mountain Valley Poll Herefords, Coolatai, commended the young bull for rising to the occasion as an example of what to expect Greg Ebbeck, Six Star Speckle Park, Bundanoon, and Stephen Beer, Royal Canberra Show Society RCSS immediate past president, Bungendore. with the Speckle Park breed. A top-five of exhibits were judged to come to the interbreed supreme champion bull, with Murray Grey, Ayr park legend L31, Limousin, Flemington Ka-Pow K20, Hereford, Lotus Legion, Charolais, Curragindi Landcruiser in the line-up. In earlier Speckle Park section judging Six Star Premier had won the 18 to 20 months bull class and junior champion prior to grand and supreme exhibit of the breed under the experienced eye of judge Derek Hayward. Mr Hayward admired the bull while on the move and its performance, bone quality and feet. “The testicular development is outstanding – this young bull is super correct with a balance of bone and carcase,” he said. “He’s a tremendously long fella and at the end of the day, length and weight will help in any breed.” Mr Hayward concluded he was honoured to judge such a group of high performing animals, saying whether from a stud or commercial perspective, he would gladly put in an extra window at his home to view any one of them in the paddock. Greg Ebbeck, exhibitor of Six Star Premier said the success in Canberra was a great way to continue the journey from the 2016 Royal Adelaide Show, where Premier brought home a clean sweep of calf, junior, grand and supreme champion of the Speckle Park breed. Cudal female takes supreme Nathan Leach and Miranda Eyb, The Trap Shorthorns, Cudal, were sashed supreme female by Stephen Beer, Royal Canberra Show Society immediate past president. NAMED as one of the most genetically advanced females in the show ring at Canberra, it was 30-monthold The Trap Krumpet, who was sashed interbreed supreme beef female of the show. The Shorthorn breed supreme exhibit began her winning streak in the 30 months or more cow class, before taking out the breed senior and grand champion female. Exhibited by Miranda Eyb, The Trap Shorthorns, Cudal, and Ross and Janell Johnson, Ronelle Park Shorthorns, Cudal, the interbreed supreme female was sired by Dunbeacon Dampier G121 and from The Trap Holly. The Trap Krumpet was praised by New Zealand judge Derek Hayward for being “so far ahead in her breed that it wasn’t funny because she has done everything bang on and is extremely efficient.” He said the width through her hips and pins was outstanding and that she was tremendously functional. – VANESSA BINKS
