FILM ASSIGNMENT 2- Lighting & Compostion
Mr. Griga
Lighting is key to make the image more interesting and more enigmatic. Combine that with the knowledge on how to compose a
good image, and you’re bound to make a fantastic photograph! As you know from the reading and in class discussions, there are
many types of lighting styles and composition options. This assignment will combine your fresh knowledge of the principles of art
and design while practicing the art of lighting and composition.
As an added challenge for those who feel adventurous, try to think of subject matter and theme. Subject matter is very important in
image making and normally defines what a photographer makes photographs of.
Part I LIGHTING- along with discovering lighting techniques, please do your best to utilize composition too.
4- Frames of Back Lighting/Shilhouette: Place different subjects in front of a bright light source. A window (during daylight
hours) is a simple and effective way to start this process. Place a subject in front of the window (or brightly lit background). You will
want to make sure you obtain a complete shadowed subject here and a brightly lit background, so take a few shots!
4-Frames of Indoor Lighting: Take some shots inside, using whatever available light there is. This means use light-bulbs,
fluorescents and of course light pouring in from a window. Pretty much any light that falls within your home will work.
4-Frames of Outdoor Lighting: Outdoor lighting is complicated. It depends on how harsh & bright the sun is…or how many
clouds are in the sky.
3- Frames of High Contrast Lighting VS. 3 Frames of Flat Soft Lighting: Take images on an over cast day or in an area where
light feels and seems evenly distributed. Then do the exact opposite and take images where there is a strong and closer light
source to your subject.
Part II COMPOSITION/Rule of 3rdsThe remaining 18 shots will be a practice in composition. Please utilize the rule of thirds so as to make stronger, more visually
interesting photographs.

Print Assignment 2
Mr. Griga
PART I-Filter Use
Just as with burning and dodging, you will utilize test strips to make prints with filters. You will want to review your notes on what
filters do and how they control contrast and INTENSITY of the image!
Don’t forget to record all exposures & filter # on the back of EACH Print
Filtration is using one or more filters to balance out the tonality and the INTENSITY of your print.
Choose 1 negative that you have shot up to this point. It needs to have satisfactory exposure & density.
Remember, a well exposed negative will print great with any filter use (which is equal to a 2.5 filter)
The following will be 5x7 size:
1st -make a test print of the image with no filter
2nd -then make a test print with a low # filter (00-2)
3rd -then make a test print with high # filter (3-5)
4th-finally, look at your test strips to determine which filter would be best to use. Remember the class discussion about contrast and
tonality to help inform your decision…be creative here too.
5th- Print a ‘perfected’ filtered print. Use burning and dodging if need be.
The idea is to show you what filters do; how they affect your print and how they operate.
Step 5 will need to be Hinge Matted for Crit!
PART 2- Expressive Printing
It will be a good idea to practice printing in expressive manners. Please use burning and dodging as well as filter usage to create an
expressive print. Please refer to part one of the print assignment as well as the previous print assignment. Remember to get
creative and use burning and dodging with the appropriate filters.
GOALS:
1.)
2.)
3.)

7.)
To apply aspects of print exposure, dodging and burning, FILTER USE and enlarger functions (1PR, 2PR, 3RE)
To create and explore proper print exposure that enhances the image to the artists intent/vision (1PR, 3RE)
Demonstrate technical skills using the enlarger, chemistry, contact sheet as well as classroom procedures to create the
prints in alignment with the project parameters (1PR, 2PR, 3PR, 3 RE)
Practice receiving feedback (from instructor) as well as giving feedback (to peers) regarding your work in progress. (1RE,
2RE, 3RE, 4RE)
Use direct as well as creative observations of your world, your culture and your experiences to select/create images that
investigate your interests (1PR, 2PR, 5PR, 1PE, 3PE, 2RE, 3RE, 6RE)
Use creative problem solving skills and independent thinking to pre-visualize and create your vision (1PR, 2PR, 3PR, 2PE,
6PE)
To express verbally as well as in writing your thoughts on how your work is affected by the context in which it’s created,
viewed. This is known as a critique where you give and receive feedback and constructive criticism.
