Total registered participants in the Federal Fed Cattle Set-Aside Program is 252 with 40 producers accepted in
the program. This week the weighted average feed cost bid of $1.46/head/day. The bids open every Monday
and close every Wednesday at noon. To register, call 1-888-292-5856. You will receive a PIN and a
registration form.
Registration for the Feeder Cattle Set-Aside Program has been very high. I would encourage producers who
want to get involved to do so quickly by calling 1-888-292-5856. The provincial target is to set aside 115,000
calves. Applications will be processed on a first-come, first-serve basis until the provincial target is met or until
4:00 p.m. January 15, 2005, whichever occurs first. If the target is met before January 15, 2005, applications
will no longer be accepted.
Ontario fed cattle trade was about steady. There were 1,243 head of finished steers and heifers sold live
through Ontario auction markets. The average fed steer price was $72.57 down $1.83 and the average heifer
price was $68.89 down $0.23. Auction markets reported fed cattle sold on a good demand. Good quality
cattle sold actively at prices $2-3 higher while plainer, aged and heavier types sold steady to somewhat under
pressure.
Cows were a bit stronger this week. The volume of cows sold through Ontario auction markets was 2,045 with
an average price of $15.99 up $0.15 from last week. Local auction markets reported cows sold on a good
demand with prices steady to $3.00 higher.
Stocker sales in Ontario continued to sell strong. Volume was up 45.5% over last week and 5% more than last
year at this time. Auction markets reported replacement cattle sold actively on a good demand with prices
stronger particularly on the better quality cattle.
Direct to packer railgrade cattle prices were down $1.00 as steers sold $127-130 and heifers sold $127-128.
In Alberta, trade was moderate with prices $2-3 higher. Steers sold from $75.70-78.60 live and $128.00131.00 flat rail. Heifers sold at $77.00-78.50 and $128.00-131.00 flat rail.
U.S. cash cattle trade was fairly significant. Steers and heifers sold at higher prices from $81-85 live and $127133 dressed.
Local beef trade followed last week’s trend of poor demand at lower prices with more cancellations. It is
expected to see that improve over the next couple of weeks.
