Brewster Robotics Team Receive Scholarship
ECISD Public Information
The Brewster Robotics Team brought home $9,000 in scholarship money from the
Javelina Robotics Competition in mid-November at the Texas A&M University in Kingsville.
The event is a two-part competition for middle and high school students featuring a robotics
game and a design competition. The competition was held in the TAMUK’s Steinke Physical
Education Complex.
Twenty student teams developed a robot based around the environmental theme “Tox-O-Mania.”
In addition to building a working robot, each team fulfilled the qualifications of the design
competition by presenting the concept of their robot through a web page, team T-shirts, a display
and an oral presentation.
Teams had six weeks to build their radio-controlled robot from a supply kit provided free of
charge by CREST-RESSACA, which is under the Frank H. Dotterweich College of Engineering
at A&M-Kingsville. The robots then competed with each other in a series of three-minute,
round-robin matches to judge their performance of an assigned task.
In addition to performance, robots were judged for creative design, elegance, how the machine
pleased the eye and its sturdiness. Elements judged in the design competition included a project
summary notebook, oral presentation, table display, and spirit and sportsmanship.
In the robot contest, Brewster placed ninth out of 20 teams (consisting of 18 high school teams
and two middle school teams). Brewster came home with a first place trophy In the
Marketing/Table Display.
In the final overall results, Brewster came in third place and received the Porky’s Pack Award,
which was given to the top three teams. The award included a $1,000 scholarship for each of the
nine members of the team.
The Brewster Robotics Team consist of Andrew Alvarez, Stephen Bazan, Marco Cavazos, Jerry
De La Garza, Sarai Pesina, Tania Sanchez, Tyler Scott, Natajah Garcia, and Ashley Alfaro.
Additional Robotics Crew included Ana Pesina, Gerome Magallan, Ben Silva, Abraham Garcia,
Carlos Gutierrez, Aaron Garcia, Derek Garcia, Sammy Garza, J.J. Munoz, Corbin Waters, and
Antonio De La Cruz (second grade mascot).
John F. Perez was the team’s head sponsor and Felipe Hernandez, the sponsor manager.
