Prayer Letter 488
Friday 29 and 30 January 2016
Friday: Phil (L); Alan; Tessa; Sue L; Sally Dias; PP Cathy C; Observers: Sarah
Stokes; Anne Skinner (new trainees)
Saturday: Luke (L); Scott; Andy C; Alison; PP: Shervin; Cathy Pugh;
Leaders Overview
Friday: Phil ‘A generally wet and blustery night with a monsoon deluge at the start of Round 3.
However we had lots of upbeat conversations, expressions of goodwill and knew that our presence
on the streets was appreciated. We wish our future pastors well.’
Saturday: Luke ‘It has been a quiet evening including the last round although we gather that four
arrests were made at Pryzm.’
Highlights
Friday
10:15 – 12:45 Over the bridge to The Old Kings Head and met up with the doorman who was very
amiable and knew of the work we did.
Enjoyed talking to our good friend Rasta Kenyatta who in honour of the miserable weather struck up
“Riders on the Storm” by the Doors. Life at the other end of the town was busier but uplifting and
we had many positive encounters with people on their way to the clubs and on their way home.
Talked at length with young homeless guy Little L who we met later on being looked after by some
young lads who were concerned about him. Also saw homeless woman P coming out of MacDonald
and she said she was on her way to Surbiton.
12:45-14-15 Still raining and set off with a sleeping bag for regular homeless woman C who is back in
the doorway of Monsoon and huddled under a few blankets. No response but saw she had taken the
sleeping bag when we looked in on round 3. Flip Flops very popular on this round along with
gestures of support and words of encouragement. Managed to give out a number of SP cards as
people were interested about donating.
14:45-15:50 Had to wait whilst the deluge subsided and then were almost immediately involved in
an altercation at the Royal Fish bar. Something had clearly happened and it was all spilling out on to
the pavement. I called it in to CC and within seconds an unmarked patrol car was there and able to
sort it all out. Plenty of people now on their way home and we were able to give out more flip flops,
advice and directions.
Saturday
11.25 Kingston Station - Have met two homeless guys, B and P. We have bought a coffee and a
subway for P who asked if we would buy coffee for his friend B who is known to Andy.
Andy: ‘ I have known B for seven or eight years. He was doing really, really well. He woke up next to
his girlfriend recently and found her dead and has been in a very bad downward spiral ever since. A
lot of people have tried to rally round and help him but we found him outside Kingston Station today
and he is very cold and very low. People with generous hearts have been buying him food. I have
invited him to my house for lunch tomorrow and hope to take him to church to talk to some of my
elders at church and pray that the healing process may start then.’
12.25 Have given out some clothes to homeless people, two pairs of socks and two hats.
1.30 Went to Hippodrome and chatted briefly to the door man there who said they had 800 in. We
walked up to Viper Rooms who had 500 in. We chatted to the Iranian taxi marshall who has become
a Christian. There was another Iranian with him. We all talked about the situation in Iran.
1.45 Opposite the telephone boxes we chatted briefly to the three people from Kingsgate who are
giving out rolls. They had brought out 300 bacon rolls. We went to look for B to give him a sleeping
bag but he had moved on. Andy is going to try to give it to him at another time.
2.55. We saw another group of about four or five young ladies in dire need of flip flops.
