The Water Cycle
Is about…
How water travels from clouds down to earth and back to clouds again
STEP 1
Precipitation
Tiny drops of condensed water grows
until they get too heavy
Heavier water drops fall to the earth
Types of precipitation =
rain, snow, hail, sleet
STEP 3
Condensation
Rain gage is used to measure
precipitation
Occurs when gases are cooled
Molecules crowd together (snuggle up)
Molecules packed together, so they take
less space
STEP 2
Evaporation
Gas can then change into a liquid
Occurs when liquid is heated by the air;
molecules separate
Liquid -to- gas OR Water -to- vapor
As they pack together, they become
more dense & thus heavier
Molecules nearest water surface bounce
away & move into the air
Evaporated water vapor cools & moves
up into sky (cooler molecules are less
dense so they rise)
