3rd February 2016
Dear Parents and Carers,
February 9th 2016 is Safer Internet Day, a day that is very important to our school and pupils. Safer
Internet Day is run by the INSAFE network and is celebrated every year across Europe, and in other
countries worldwide.
In the UK, Safer Internet Day is organised by the UK Safer Internet Centre (www.saferinternet.org.uk),
and this year’s theme is “Play your part for a better internet.”
As you are probably aware, inappropriate use of social media sites and online gaming through mobile
phones and other devices is an increasing concern in society today. Children can very easily say and send
inappropriate words and images over phones, tablets, gaming consoles and other internet devices.
During the week of the 9th February, the children at Lowton West Primary School will be supporting Safer
Internet Day 2016 by learning about and carrying out activities linked to staying safe online. The children
will be focusing on respecting each other’s differences and reporting inappropriate behaviour online.
As many internet safety issues take place outside of school, here are some key points to remember when
considering your child’s internet usage:



Speaking with your child on a regular basis-outline the risks and responsibilities when online
Be aware of any social media sites that your child may have joined-are they age appropriate?
Discuss strategies with your child about reporting inappropriate comments and behaviour online

online safety with your child at home.
