Derby Cathedral
Visiting Choirs
General Information
[updated February 2015]
2
Thank you very much indeed for your willingness to help lead
our worship in Derby Cathedral. The hard work and effort put
in by visiting choirs is hugely appreciated by all of us here.
Organists
You will need a separate organist and will probably want to
bring your own. Please note that, particularly on Sundays, this
needs to be someone experienced. If on the other hand you
would like us to provide an organist, we would be pleased to do
so.
Accommodation
There are a number of hotels in Derby. Jurys Inn is very close
to the Cathedral and therefore convenient:

Rehearsals
As you will see (in Guidance for Conductors), some rehearsal
time is built into the schedule. If you need extra rehearsal time,
either in the Song School or in the Cathedral itself, please let us
know by contacting either Tom Corfield
([email protected] and 01332 367736) or the Cathedral
Vergers (01332 345848). There can be some flexibility about
practice for both choir and organist, but obviously the sooner
you communicate your requests, the more likely it is that we
will be able to accommodate them. This also applies to organ
rehearsal.
Communication about two months before your visit
At this point please let us know your chosen music (see pp. 5-6
for a list of what is required) so that it can be printed on the
monthly music list. If you are singing on a Sunday the
concluding organ voluntaries are also needed. At the same time,
please also confirm any additional rehearsal requirements, if you
have not already done so, and let us know if car parking is
required. We in return will be able to notify you of the
psalmody and the hymns at the service(s) at which you are
singing
Finding the Cathedral
Derby Cathedral is on Iron Gate at the North end of Derby City
Centre in the area called ‘The Cathedral Quarter’.
[From the M1] or from Nottingham:
[Exit at Junction 25 (westbound)] and follow the A52 into
Derby. On the approach to the roundabout (Pentagon
Island), take the middle lane (the left lane splits in the final
approach) and go straight on. Still in the middle lane, take
the right fork (signposted to City Centre North, Matlock
4
and Ashbourne). After the underpass, take both new lefthand lanes as they appear. On the second of these you will
pass the new Jury’s Inn on your right. At the traffic lights
by the Aga Shop, turn left. The Cathedral is straight
ahead, but for the Cathedral Car Park take the first left into
St Michael’s Lane. The Car Park is 20 yards down the
lane on your right.
From the A38 (coming up from the south):
Take the exit labelled Derby (the road becomes three lanes
and you move into the left-hand one). At the big
roundabout take the second exit following the signs to the
city centre. The big Derby Royal Hospital is on your right.
Go straight across two sets of traffic lights and at the
roundabout at the bottom of the hill turn left onto the Inner
Ring Road. Go straight across the first set of lights and at
the second set (with Radio Derby on your left) turn right.
100 yards later, at the T- junction, turn left. When you
reach the traffic lights you have almost arrived. The
Cathedral is round to your right. For the Cathedral Car
Park, however, turn left at the lights and almost
immediately right into St Michael’s Lane. The Car Park is
20 yards down the lane on your right.
From the A38 (coming down from the north):
At the first big roundabout stay on the A 38 (in effect a
right turn). At the next junction bear left and follow the
A6 down into Derby, going straight on at the roundabout
by the Broadway pub and straight across the lights at the
bottom of the hill. Shortly afterwards, turn left down onto
the Inner Ring Road. Stay in the inside lane and take the
next left turn. Almost immediately, turn left over the river
and then left again under the Inner Ring Road. The
Cathedral is ahead of you, but for the Cathedral Car Park
turn right onto St Michael’s Lane. The Car Park is then on
your left.

Maps can be found via the Cathedral website:
www.derbycathedral.org. Click on ‘Contact’ at the
bottom of the column on the left. For users of satellite
navigation, the Cathedral postcode is DE1 3GP and the
postcode of the Cathedral Car Park is DE1 3DR.
If in doubt ask for the ‘Cathedral Quarter’ or ring the
Cathedral for directions: 01332 345848.
Car parking
The Cathedral Car Park is not immediately adjacent to the
Cathedral, but is in St Michael’s Lane off Queen Street. It is
free of charge on Sundays. On Saturdays (and at other times
during the week) there is normally a charge. If singers mention
that they are part of a visiting choir this will normally be
waived, but if you could share lifts and keep the number of cars
to a minimum, this would be appreciated because the Car Park is
an important source of revenue for the Cathedral. If you need to
use the Car Park overnight, this is possible at your own risk, but
we would need the registration number of each vehicle. You
can ring the Cathedral office direct about this on 01332 341201
x 20). The nearest parking for coaches, unfortunately, is some
way away, in an area of Derby called Pride Park, though it is, of
course, possible to unload a coach near the Cathedral.
The Cathedral Coffee House
Situated opposite the west door of the Cathedral, this offers a
20% discount to members of visiting choirs.
Security
Items left unattended in the Song School are vulnerable. There
is a lockable cupboard in the song school where handbags and
the like can be safely stowed. Please ask the verger for the
combination number.

Guided tours
If you would like a guided tour of the Cathedral, we would be
pleased to arrange this. Please let us know.
Hymns
It may be easiest for you to photocopy the hymns for your visit,
but please note that on Sundays the words in our order of service
may be slightly different from those in New English Hymnal.
Singers should read the words from the service order.
Information about services and the music
required
Full details of the services are found in
Guidance for Conductors
Weekday Evensong, 5.15 p.m.

This is a straightforward BCP service at which you will need to
sing the following:
1.
2.
3.
4.
Preces and Responses (your choice)
A hymn (we choose this)
A psalm (we choose this from the lectionary)
A setting of the Magnificat and Nunc Dimittis (your
choice)
5. An anthem (your choice)
6. The Naylor final responses (normally ferial Monday to
Friday unless it is a major feast) and festal on Saturdays

During Eastertide a dismissal by Peter Gould is sung,
7
which can be found on the Cathedral website (via Visiting
Choirs) or posted to you.
Please note that we do not normally sing an introit.
Sunday Eucharist, 10.45 a.m.
This is Common Worship Holy Communion at which you will
need to sing the following:
1. A setting of the Gloria (Kyrie in Advent and Lent),
Sanctus, Benedictus and Agnus Dei
2. A Psalm (Common Worship words without Gloria; may
be something different during Lent)
3. A Communion motet
4. Four hymns
5. Various choral and congregational responses in settings by
Peter Gould, namely an Alleluia before the Gospel, Gospel
responses, the Sursum Corda, interpolations in the
Eucharistic Prayer and the Dismissal. These will be sent
to you, though they can also be found on the Cathedral
website (via Visiting Choirs). Copies will be available for
you in the song school.
6. During festival seasons (Sundays after Epiphany and
Sundays after Easter) there is a short introit.
Sunday Evensong, 6.00 p.m.
As for a weekday Evensong, though with two extra hymns.
Refreshments
On Saturdays, tea and coffee is served at 4.45 p.m. (between
your rehearsal and the start of Evensong), unless you are here
for a whole weekend, in which case there will instead be a small
reception with wine and nibbles after Saturday’s Evensong.
