Mock Elections 2012 HHSA Lessons Day 1: Quickwrite Is it important for people in Huntington Park to vote, why or why not? Question/Concept Board As a team, write down 3 things you know about elections to be true (concepts) and write down 1-2 questions your team has about elections and voting. Once all post-its have been filled, post them on the question/concept board. It’s Extremely Important for all eligible voters to vote, but why??? Why do you vote?? Senator and Representative State Assemblyman State and County Propositions Focus on the Executive Office: Using the handout pg. 3 “President and Vice President”, complete the flow map with details of each stage to show how the president gets voted for. States Electoral Votes Electoral College Let’s do the research, write 1-2 pages of Cornell Notes about the candidates for president and vice-president by watching the news, debates, or online. Your Homework: Watch the news, debates, commercials, and ask people questions to find out as much as you can about the presidential candidates. Be ready to cast your vote in a couple of weeks. Day 2 Quickwrite: What’s a Prop?? Have you seen any commercials about the propositions…or props?? If so, what do you remember about them? If not, what do you think propositions are? Propositions are….. Proposed laws presented to the public to vote on. A proposition passes and becomes law when it receives more than 50 percent YES votes. On November 6th, California will vote on propositions 30 through 39 are “initiatives.” For an initiative: • A YES vote means that you support the way the proposition would change things. • A NO vote means that you want to leave things the way they are now. October 30th through the 2nd…. It’s your turn to vote on the propositions as well!!!! So, let’s do some research and find out the info, but also try to answer the question: Is voting in the election important for the people of Huntington Park? Proposition Research Posters Each group must create a poster informing the class about Props that you will vote on: 30, 31, 34, 36, 37, and 38 Poster Setup: Proposition Number and Title: Explanation of the Proposition (What does it say?) Pros: Cons How could this affect the Huntington Park Community? Day 3: Quickwrite What is the most interesting thing you have learned about voting, so far? Gallery Walk: Create a 6 box chart on your own paper titled: Propositions In boxes #1-5, write down the title and at least 4 bullet points about each proposition as the presenter explains their poster. Feel free to ask questions to understand everything. After the gallery walk, in box #6, record the prop names and what your vote will be on each one.
