Copeland Canoe Club Family fun and coaching weekend at Scarness on Bassenthwaite Lake Bassenthwaite Lake is recognised as being of national and international nature conservation importance. It is recognised as a Site of Special Scientific Interest (SSSI) and a Special Area of Conservation (SAC). The Lake is owned by the Lake District National Park. In 1993, the lake and part of the shoreline were declared a National Nature Reserve. Access to the lake and surrounding land is strictly controlled. For these reasons, the Scarness campsite has a limit of 40 people camping for educational purposes only. We are also limited to how many people/boats can be on the water. We currently have a licence for 34 boats. There is no limit on how many people can be on the Site during the day. For these reasons, we are operating a booking system (form overleaf). Anyone can apply, but priority will be given as follows: a) Club Coaches (else there is no one to supervise). b) Club members who didn’t go last year. c) Club members who did go last year. d) Family and friends. Please don’t hold back from applying, I’m sure we can accommodate most people. This letter is being issued on Tuesday 16th May at the pool and outdoor sessions. Bookings open on Tuesday 23rd. You can submit your form at the pool or at an outdoor session on a Tuesday. Bookings should be accompanied by a deposit of £5 per person per night camped. We are asking for a deposit as in previous years some people have booked and then not turned up, leaving others disappointed. If you can’t make it, then your deposit will be refunded if we can fill your space. If the above is at all confusing, please see Andy, Al or Mark with any questions. It starts Friday 7th July 18:00 onwards (make your own way there). It finishes Sunday 9th July around 16:00. You can attend as much or little as you like. Camping is available Friday & Saturday night at £10 per person per night (£5pppn for those under 16 who are Club members). £5 per day to launch your own boat, £7 per day to hire a boat. Open to all members, families and friends. Those on the water MUST be able to swim 50 metres (or see Andy). There will be open canoes, kayaks, group canoes, hopefully stand-up-paddleboards and possibly sailing on offer. You can work towards and possibly gain Paddlepower or Star awards. Weather permitting, there may be a night paddle on the Friday or Saturday night. There is a common room, kettle for drinks, showers, and a barbecue. You will need to bring; personal paddling and camping gear, food and drink and if you are going to barbecue – charcoal or portable barbecues and cookers if you are going to cook food. We will provide Instructors. Under 18’s must be accompanied by a Parent or other suitable adult. Most people will camp on the upper field by the facilities. The lower field is the “quiet” field and is reserved for those who want (need!) an early night. PLEASE NOTE THE CAMP SITE NEEDS TO BE SILENT BY 23.00hrs so as to prevent complaints from the adjacent log cabins.
