Nabnasset School Advisory Council Meeting Minutes for January 31, 2017 Nabnasset Conference Room Present: Mrs. DuBois, Mrs. Loughman, Mrs. Quinn, Mrs. Heller, Mrs. Mallon, Mrs. Eckroth, Mrs. Boutet, Mr. Hillam, Mr. House 1. Meeting Minutes – The minutes from the November 29th meeting were read and approved. They are posted on the Nabnasset website. 2. School Update – We had a second round of interviews for the Nab/Miller interim art teacher position. A candidate taught a demonstration lesson this morning, and will interview with Superintendent Bill Olsen tomorrow. The reference check was completed this afternoon. The school committee voted to add a second FDK class in each building next school year. The configuration at Nab will be the following: 2 FDK classes, 1 AM/PM class, and a .5 AM or PM class. The extended day class will remain. Our school improvement plan goal to expand learning opportunities to students by offering after school clubs started this month. The clubs include: First Grade Math Club – Ms. Navarro and Mrs. Maguire Second Grade Math Club – Mrs. McCusker and Mrs. Quinn Mindful Kids Club – Mrs. Kelly Sign Language Club – Mrs. Berlinski First Grade Book Club – Mrs. Boutet and Mrs. Loughman A Second Grade Book Club will follow the four week First Grade Book Club. While we increased the choices, we had to have lotteries for every club. The Great Kindness Challenge started last week. We hope to increase participation (45%). The Joesph Middlemiss Foundation is sponsoring the month long challenge to support our Superhero themed Field Day. The district is undergoing a Coordinated Program Review. The DESE facilitates the reviews every 7 years to check compliance on federal and state programs. The process started last spring with a self-assessment. The second step was a records review. Schools were randomly chosen to check cumulative files. Currently, we are in the third step – onsite interviews. Nabnasset School was chosen, and eight staff members were randomly selected to be interviewed. The district will receive a summary report based on the information gathered. Recommendations will be reviewed with the leadership team. We look forward to the second Nab/Abbot Family Literacy Night on March 2nd at the Abbot School. A flier was sent home last week. This year we are reading the book Granny Torrelli Makes Soup by Sharon Creech. Families that sign up will receive a copy of the book. Kindergarten Registration is on March 6th and 7th. The PTC met on January 19th. The School Store is going very well. We hope to add more volunteers to increase efficiency with the large number of students participating. The Compassion Corner is more popular this year. The Star Reader Program starts in February. The Birthday Book Club is up and running on the PTC website. Kindergarten Math and Science Night is on February 16th. 3. District Advisory Council Training – On January 12th Chuck Christensen, Education Consultant, met with the 9 advisory councils. He gave an overview of the councils including the mission, purpose, roles and responsibilities of council members. In addition, he discussed ground rules, effective meetings and team effort. Mrs. DuBois and Mr. House shared their thoughts on the meeting. 4. Other – Mrs. Mallon and Mrs. Eckroth announced they are running for school committee. Mrs. Mallon suggested offering a Garden Club in the spring. Mrs. Eckroth suggested adding a Club page in the yearbook. The next meeting is on Wednesday, March 1st (changed from February 28th).
