ENGLISH 59600/43500: GAMES FOR TEACHING
AND TRAINING IN THE CLASSROOM/WORKPLACE
MW 2-3:15
Researchers and educators have become increasingly interested in incorporating digital
games for instructional purposes, both in the classroom and in the workplace. These
approaches are typically referred to as game-based learning (for example, using
commercial games designed for entertainment as teaching/training tools) or serious
games (games designed specifically for non-entertainment purposes). Gamification, a
somewhat newer construct, refers to using principles of game mechanics in non-game
situations.
Course Objectives:
•
Explore the development and affordances of gamification, serious games, and other
game-based systems and their implications for teaching and training in the
classroom/workplace.
•
Determine what promise current research in game studies may hold for how we design
game-based learning.
•
Learn about effective assessment strategies for game-based learning in the
workplace/classroom.
•
Develop strategies for training/teaching with principles of gamification, serious games,
and other game-based learning technologies.
•
Develop original concepts and applications for games.
