37 Ohio Ave Athens, OH 45701 740-594-2302 www.factorystreetstudio.org Dear Factory Street Studio Dancers and Families, Thank you for being a part of our studio this fall! Our students have grown as dancers and artists by leaps and bounds…. literally! We have enjoyed working with our dancers and can’t wait to get back in the studio after Winter Break. Below is information about upcoming events including registration, our Winter Dance Celebration, and the annual Spring Concert. Registration for Winter/Spring: Walk-in registration will be held from 3:00pm – 6:30pm Tuesday, December 7th through Thursday, December 9th. You can also mail your registration. PLEASE NOTE: Registration is filled on a first-come, first-serve basis. There is no priority registration. Enrollment in a Fall Semester class DOES NOT guarantee enrollment in Winter/Spring Semester! This is especially important for our beginner classes—spaces DO fill up, so be sure to get your registration in immediately, either by mail or during walk-in registration hours. A waiting list will be started once classes are full, but there is no guarantee of enrollment. All bills from Fall Semester MUST BE PAID in order to register for Winter/Spring Semester. Winter Dance Celebration: For this year’s in-studio Winter Concert, we will be celebrating our students’ creativity with performances by our Creative Kids Company. This informal concert is a showing of student-made work by dancers enrolled in our Composition class, who have worked with various guest artists through our Visiting Artists in Composition program. A recommended $5 donation will be taken at the door to go towards our Scholarship Fund and Junior/Senior OhioDance Festival Field Trip. Our Winter Dance and Art Celebration will be held at Factory Street on Saturday, December 18th at 7:00pm. Spring Concert: The coming of our Winter/Spring Semester also signals the coming of our annual Spring Concert at Stuart’s Opera House in Nelsonville. All students from Tech 1B, Tap 1 and up are invited to perform in this celebration. This year we will hold two performances, April 29th at 7:00pm and April 30th at 2:00pm. **Important Spring Concert information is on the back of this letter. Have a beautiful and fun-filled holiday season! I look forward to working with you all in January! Amanda Kurtz Artistic Director, Factory Street Studio Spring Concert 2011 Information Sheet What is the Spring Concert? Our annual Spring Concert is the culmination of a year’s worth of study for our students and the time when they get to perform for their families and friends on a professional stage. It is also our biggest fundraiser of the year, which helps us cover operating expenses and allows us to bring quality programming to the community year-round. The Spring Concert is being held at Stuart’s Opera House this year on April 29th at 7:00pm and April 30th at 2:00pm. Who is involved? Students enrolled in levels, Tech 1B, Tap 1, and above are invited to perform with their classmates in both of the shows. Students will learn choreography for their Spring Concert piece during class time (some class times have been adjusted to incorporate rehearsal times). Performing in the annual Spring Concert is NOT mandatory; should a student not wish to participate, please let their teacher know as soon as possible. We also encourage the involvement of parent volunteers to help during the weeks prior to and during the concert. What fees are involved? Concert Fee: The $15.00 concert fee is applied to all classes that are going to perform in the concert. This fee helps to offset two major costs: 1) Although tuition prices remain the same, many class times have been increased, which means teachers are receiving additional payroll. 2) We are fortunate to have quality choreographers and technicians available to help make the concert a professional and fully produced experience. Tech week rehearsals occur after the semester ends and are not covered by normal tuition fees. This concert fee helps soften the expense of paying choreographers, teachers, and technicians during tech week. **Families are only responsible for paying $15/class for up to four classes. After the first four classes per family, additional classes are exempt from the concert fee. Costume Fee: This additional fee covers costumes purchased for the concert. We encourage our teachers to find low-cost costumes that can be worn offstage during the year as well as onstage. Whereas at other dance studios, families pay hundreds of dollars for costumes worn in one performance, our costume fees will NOT exceed $30 per piece. Tickets: Ticket sales cover the cost of renting Stuart’s Opera House for tech week and the two shows. Tickets are $15 for adults and $12 for children. Some scholarships are available to cover ticket costs. Student Attendance Policy: Because rehearsals take place during class times, it is imperative that students attend every class, barring sickness or family emergencies. The choreographers and dancers have very few hours with which to create pieces. Absences not only compromise the piece they are creating, but add unnecessary confusion, stress, and repetition for all involved. At the discretion of the choreographer and director, a dancer who has missed two rehearsals may be removed from a piece. If you have any questions or concerns, please contact Amanda at [email protected] Curriculum, Level, and Class Descriptions Factory Street Studio’s curriculum is founded on a fourteen week, methods-based program designed to bring cohesiveness to students’ dance education. Every week throughout the semester, different dance concepts such as space, time, energy, and shape are incorporated into each class using movement games, concept-specific exercises, and improvisations. Teachers are also encouraged to take inspiration from Bartenieff Fundamentals and Rudolph Laban’s movement effort systems. These concepts are used as the basis for each lesson plan regardless of the style of dance (teachers of creative movement, modern, ballet, and jazz classes will be incorporating the weekly concept into the genre-specific structure of that technique). This fourteen week plan exceeds the standards for K-12 Dance Education as put out by the NAEA. Our Technique Levels: Factory Street’s class levels are broken up into 6 levels from beginner to advanced. Each “tech” group is made up of students within specific age ranges and developmental stages. We strive to place students in appropriate class levels according to age, dance experience, and maturity level. We run on a two-year cycle wherein students complete two full consecutive years in their current Tech level before advancing to the next level. Below are descriptions of our Tech levels: Beginner Levels: Tech 1 (a and b): ages 5-7, building the foundations of dance and movement skills Tech 2: ages 8-10, classes with more structured lesson plans in specific genres of dance (ballet and modern), still building foundational skills, coordination, and rhythm Intermediate Levels: Tech 3: ages 10-12, longer, more intense classes help develop stamina, speed, strength, and flexibility. Students begin to develop compositional skills as well. Tech 4: ages 12-14, more advanced skills are taught, technique is refined, and concepts of performance and quality of movement are presented. Tech 5 and 6: ages 14+, students who have many years of dance experience and who have a solid foundation in technique take classes at a pre-professional level, advanced skills are taught and refined with an emphasis on performance. Our Class Offerings: Creative Movement for Children – These classes lay the foundation of an understanding of dance concepts and basic movement skills. Instructors create lesson plans that give a good balance of structure and exploration through traditional dance exercises, movement games, and skill building. Our Pre-School Movement Fun, Movement Fun, Tech 1A, and Tech 1B classes are all creative movement classes. Modern – Modern Dance is a genre of dance that emphasizes not just form and athleticism, but expressiveness and creativity as well. Students learn many traditional techniques such as Humphrey/Limon and Horton, while being introduced to concepts of improvisation and composition. Ballet – Our classes in classical ballet technique are a blend of Vaganova (Russian) and Cecchetti (Italian) techniques, with an emphasis on line, anatomically correct form, strength, and flexibility. As our students progress to more advanced levels, instruction en pointe is offered to dancers who exhibit exceptional strength and technique. Jazz – We offer jazz classes to students starting at the Tech 3 level. As a highly stylized dance form, it combines high-energy movement and technical skills such as turning, jumping, and fast footwork. Jazz techniques include influences from Broadway, Latin Jazz, and West Coast style jazz. Tap – Tap classes at Factory Street are a combination of the “hoofing” style of tap and traditional Broadway tap styles. Students will gain an understanding of rhythm, percussive movement, and progress from basic to more complicated steps of the tap repertoire. Composition – Composition classes teach choreographic techniques so that students learn how to create their own dances. Students will be introduced to concepts such as improvisation and movement studies to create fully developed dances. Students enrolled in our Composition classes are also invited to be a part of our outreach performance group, the FSS Creative Kids Company. Schedule of Classes Winter 2011 Classes run Monday, January 3rd through Saturday, April 23rd. *OPEN REGISTRATION Begins December 7th. The week of March 14th – 19th will be reserved for snow-day make-up classes. FSS will be CLOSED March 21th – 26th for Spring Break. We WILL be holding classes during all scheduled school holidays. Scholarships and Work-Study: Factory Street Studio strives to provide high-quality dance education to all students, regardless of financial status. A limited number of need-based scholarships and work-study positions are available to assist with the cost of tuition. Application forms can be found in this Information Packet or online under the “Forms” tab at our website (www.factorystreetstudio.org). Scholarship and Work-Study forms are due no later than Monday, January 6th 2011. Parent and Dancer Guidelines 1) Parents and guardians can expect that all faculty and staff will respect the well being of each student, treat her/him fairly, and encourage their growth and self-esteem as dancers as stated in Factory Street’s mission statement. Should any concern or problem arise, do not hesitate to speak with faculty or the Artistic Director. Student Drop-off and Pick-up 2) Students are to arrive on time to class. Teachers will be present ten minutes prior to the time class begins. Students arriving after class warm-up has begun may be asked to sit out of class to reduce the risk of injury. 3) Pick your children up immediately after class. Please note that office hours end at 6:30 Monday through Thursday and at 12:00 on Saturday. Late pick up after these times for students under the age of 16 is unacceptable. Please call the studio to notify the office if you will be late due to an emergency. If late pick-up is chronic, a fee will be assessed. If your child is under the age of 10, we ask that you come inside the building to pick them up. This is especially important during the evening hours! 4) Factory Street Studio assumes no responsibility for children on the premises before, after, or between their specified class times. Parents and guardians are responsible for arranging proper supervision of their children if it is necessary for them to stay in the building for periods of time before, after, or in between classes. Parents may want to consider making arrangements with older students or baby-sitters to ensure supervision of younger students. 5) If your child will be absent from class, please contact the office prior to the class time. This is especially mandatory with regard to rehearsals and performances. During Spring Concert rehearsals, if a student has two or more non-emergency absences from class, he/she may be removed from the concert piece at the choreographer’s discretion. 6) Because FSS is located in a residential area, we strive to be good neighbors and respect those who share our neighborhood. When parking, please do not block driveways. We ask that drivers do not use driveways to turn around in and pull to the side of the road when waiting for students to get out of class. We appreciate your cooperation in this! Parent/Guardian Observation 7) Parents, family members, and guardians with students in Pre-school Movement Fun, Movement Fun, Tap 1, Tech 1A, and Tech 1B are invited to observe the FIRST and LAST classes of the semester. We ask that parents wait in our sitting area while classes are in session during the semester. Young students are encouraged to engage with their instructors and classmates in order to become comfortable with taking direction with as few distractions as possible. Special exceptions may be made. Student Expectations 8) Students are to arrive wearing appropriate dance attire with their hair pulled back. It is imperative that students be able to move freely without inhibition and that teachers are able to clearly see the line of the body in order to properly assess alignment and posture. Modern and Jazz classes (including Movement Fun, Tech. 1A & Tech. 1B, CKC) - leotard, tank top or fitted t-shirt with tights, leggings, or dance pants, bare feet. Students in jazz classes may wear jazz shoes. Ballet classes – leotard, tights or leggings, ballet shoes or cotton socks. Students in Intermediate and Advanced Pointe, or Tech 5/6 Ballet may wear ballet skirts during class. Tap classes - pedestrian clothing is acceptable; tap shoes mandatory. *Students may not wear the following items: short shorts, baggy sweatpants, pajamas, or jewelry (no dangling earrings, bracelets, or necklaces). Adult and Fitness classes – comfortable clothing that allows freedom of movement such as gym shorts, yoga pants, t-shirts, or workout clothes. 9) Just as teachers are expected to respect students, students are expected to respect the faculty and staff at FSS as well as the building and studios. As a matter of respect, we ask that students keep talking to a minimum during class and participate fully in the lesson. Students who consistently refuse to follow directions or respect their classmates may be asked to sit out of class (Behavior Policy outlined below). When using the studio, kitchen, lobby, and bathroom areas, students will be expected to clean up after themselves. No food or drink is permitted within the studios with the exception of water bottles. Gum is prohibited during class. 10) As teachers we are committed to educate dancers, model behaviors, and help dancers grow with love and respect in this program. If for any reason a dancer does not meet the above expectations outlined in item 8, Factory Street Studio enforces a 3-strike policy with regard to students misbehaving at the studio – in or outside of class. Strike 1 is a warning; student is still able to participate in dance class. Strike 2 is an in class time-out, student will be asked to sit on the bench in the classroom and not participate in class. The instructor will determine the length of time for the time-out. Strike 3 student will be asked to leave the classroom and sit in the office until class is finished. In the case of a Strike 3, the teacher will talk to both student and parent about behavior issues. Snow Days and Class Cancellations 11) The studio will follow the Athens City Schools snow policy. Should classes at Athens City Schools get canceled due to dangerous weather conditions, Factory Street Studio classes will also be canceled. Should weather conditions worsen during the day while Athens Schools are in session, the studio reserves the right to cancel classes. FSS will send out emails, have a notification on our website and Facebook page, and update our voicemail to let our families know when classes will be canceled due to weather. We understand that some families may not be able to get to classes due to bad road conditions in their neighborhoods even when school is in session, so please use caution when deciding to use the roads this winter. Absences due to bad weather will not affect students’ participation in the Spring Concert. Tuition and Payments 12) Tuition may be paid in full at the time of registration or in three installments. If paying in installments, payment is due by the 3rd Saturday of every month during the semester. Payments can be made by cash, check, or credit card. A 4% surcharge will be added if paying by card to cover credit card company fees. 13) No refunds will be made after the fourth week of classes. Parents and guardians must contact the office in writing if their children will be dropping a class, and will be responsible for payment for classes that occurred prior to giving notice. 14) A limited number of scholarships and work-study positions are available. Applications are available prior to and during the first weeks of the semester. We encourage families to look into these options, as it is our mission to provide dance education to all students, regardless of their financial situations. We also have limited bartering options according to the needs of the studio. Information about bartering will be made available at the beginning of each fall semester. After reading over these guidelines with your child, please have them sign and bring in the bottom portion of this page to the studio. Thank you. I have read and understand the above guidelines and responsibilities. ___________________________________ Dancer/Student Signature ___________________________________ Parent/Guardian _____________________________ Print Name _____________________________ Print Name ________________ Date ________________ Date Registration Form Open registration for all families begins December 7th.
