Stonewall Background Information
Stonewall was founded in 1989 by people whose aim was to create a highly professional lobbying
organisation to put the case for equality on the mainstream political agenda. The organisation has
become widely recognised for its work in transforming the legislative landscape for Britain’s 3.7m
lesbian, gay and bisexual people including securing equal marriage in 2013. Our strategy is now to
work to ensure equality in every part of the lived experience of LGBT people at home, at school and
at work.
We work with a comprehensive range of stakeholders and are one of the most effective campaigning
charities in Great Britain. Stonewall is at a crucial stage. The challenges that we face are complex as
we attempt to ensure that every single lesbian, gay, bisexual and trans person achieves full equality.
We have an ambition to reach further into our communities, sharing our knowledge, interventions
and campaigns with the widest possible audience. We no longer have to just convince politicians; we
have to convince the owner of the small business, the dad who doesn’t want a gay son, the priest
who doesn’t know he has lesbian parishioners.
The Empowerment Programmes team
In 2015 Stonewall expanded our ‘Train the Trainer programme’, the training courses through which
Stonewall gives teachers the knowledge, tools and confidence to train their colleagues on tackling
homophobic, biphobic and transphobic bullying. Rather than Stonewall continuing to directly
delivering all these courses, we trained over 60 Training Partners to deliver Train the Trainer to
schools in their local communities. All the schools trained would become Stonewall School Champions
and received ongoing support and guidance.
Stonewall’s Empowerment Programmes exist to accelerate equality for LGBT people in the workplace
and wider communities by:



expertly supporting the personal and professional development of LGBT leaders, role models
and allies
creating and supporting a growing network of influential Stonewall alumni who are visible,
successful lesbian, gay, bisexual and trans role models and leaders spanning all sectors and
communities
creating bespoke resources and programmes which empower and enable individuals,
organisations and communities to provide an inclusive environment for lesbian, gay, bisexual
and trans people
Our growing suite of personal and professional development programmes currently includes the
following:




Annual two day residential flagship Leadership Programme
LGBT Role Models Programmes

Stonewall’s Membership Programmes exist to accelerate equality for LGBT people by helping

through membership of one our innovative champion programmes.
Our membership programmes include:



Diversity Champions Programme - Britain’s leading employers’ membership forum, creating

in preventing and tackling homophobia, biphobia and transphobia in schools and supporting
LGBT young people in their local communities

throughout their operations. Our 67 members, including some of the world’s biggest brands,
work together with Stonewall to share best practice and learning across diverse legal, social
and cultural landscapes for LGBT equality
Stonewall staff
At Stonewall we believe our people to be our most precious resource. We aim to recruit the very best
staff – with a mix of private, public and third sector backgrounds – and have an ambition to make
Stonewall an ‘employer of choice’. We’ve reviewed our benefits package in recent years to reflect
this. In our most recent (October 2016) staff survey:



93% of staff said they were proud to work for Stonewall
96% of staff enjoy working with the people at Stonewall
91% of staff said that they enjoy what they do
We believe we have an obligation to role model some of the objectives that we encourage others to
