November 2014 KNOW SOMEONE WHO COULD USE A HUG? JUST IN TIME FOR THE HOLIDAYS: HOME UTILITY GIFT (HUG) CERTIFICATES. It happens every year. You find yourself stumped over what to get that one person on your holiday list who’s impossible to buy for. The solution: A Home Utility Gift (HUG) certificate. A HUG credits the utility account of any KU customer in the amount you choose (minimum $25). When you purchase a HUG, we’ll automatically deduct the amount of your purchase from the recipient’s next bill. We’ll even mail you a gift certificate you can present to the recipient. HUGs are especially ideal for families in need, senior citizens, newlyweds and college students who live off-campus, as well as for churches, non-profits and social service organizations. For more information about the HUG program, visit our website at lge-ku.com and enter the word HUG in the search field or call 1-800-981-0600 to speak with a representative. PLANT FOR THE PLANET. Old Man Winter will soon be paying us all a (hopefully not too) lengthy visit. Make the best of it with these home winterizing tips: • Have your HVAC system professionally inspected to ensure it is working as efficiently as it should. • Clean registers, baseboard heaters and radiators. • Check and, if necessary, replace the furnace filter once a month or as recommended by your furnace manufacturer. • Have your heating ducts professionally cleaned. • Caulk or use weather stripping around drafty windows and doors; you can also tape clear plastic film to the inside of window frames. • Install tight-fitting, insulating drapes or shades on windows that feel drafty after weatherizing. • When the fireplace isn’t in use, make sure the damper is fully closed. You can also stuff newspaper in the chimney to eliminate drafts. Don’t forget to remove it before you build a fire. • Shut off the water to the outside spigots to prevent pipes from bursting. A MAJOR MILESTONE IN RECYCLING THE FRIDGE AND FREEZER RECYCLING PROGRAM REACHES THE 20,000 MARK. The numbers don’t lie. Our Fridge and Freezer Recycling program has been a huge success. And we have you to thank. In just two years, residential customers have offered up 20,000 refrigerators and freezers for recycling through the program. That’s a big number, but what does it really mean? It’s the equivalent of more than 15,000 megawatt-hours of energy offset – enough energy to power more than 1,200 homes for an entire year. All told, more than three million pounds of metal and plastic have been recycled rather than placed in a landfill. That’s a number we can all be proud of. Got an older, working refrigerator or freezer you’d like to recycle (and get a check for $50)? To get started, visit lge-ku.com/recycle or call 1-800-356-5467.
