The Role and Toll of Emotion in Safeguarding - Tony Morrison
Event a huge success
Our latest best practice event held in Manchester
was a resounding success, and with 100
delegates, the venue was full to capacity. The
seminar focused on the impact of anxiety and the
central role and function of emotional
intelligence in safeguarding activity including the
implications for leadership. Tony Morrison said “I
had a great deal of good feedback from this
event, but was especially touched when a newly
qualified social worker attending the event said
that it helped her deal with a potentially disturbing
incident; which being so early in her career, could
have had long term emotional repercussions for
her.”
Abby Dacres, Safeguarding Children e-Academy
Manager, said “We were really honoured that
Tony was able to lead this event as he is very
busy, but when he learned of our free best
practice events he felt that it was a good way to
get the message across to many areas and
disciplines; we hope to engage him for another
date next year.”
The afternoon saw everyone networking followed
by a regional steering group meeting which was
also attended by non-members who wanted to
find out more about the e-Academy. For the full
story and to view a podcast of this event, visit our

BASPCAN International
Congress
Held every three years, the BASPCAN
International Congress is attended by leading
experts in Safeguarding and hundreds of key
professionals in this field. Liz Omar,
Safeguarding e-Academy Account Manager, said
“It was a great opportunity for us to learn more
about the field of safeguarding whilst letting
people know what we do. We had an information
stand which generated a huge amount of interest
from potential new members from all over the
world.”

Information Sharing
Level 2
Information Sharing is addressed as an
introduction in our highly successful
Integrated Working course. However,
key workers who will be tasked with
accessing the Government’s new
ContactPoint system will require more
in-depth, scenario-based training prior to
being allowed access to the system.
Whilst it was originally stated that this
training must be delivered face-to-face, it has now been agreed that
e-learning can be used for this element of the training.
The course was co-created by Newcastle and Oldham information sharing experts
and has been peer reviewed by the specialists from the DCSF.
Mental Capacity Act
The next course in our adult services
series will be released this week.
Following hot on the success of the
Safeguarding Adults course, the Mental
Capacity Act course covers all aspects of
the law, including recent changes and
recommendations. This course aims to
help care workers look at how the Act will
affect them and help them to develop so
that they can recognise and support people who may lack the capacity to make
their own decisions. The next course in this series is the Deprivation of Liberty
Standards (DOLS).
New Courses
for Members
The Awareness of Child Abuse and
Neglect core course is now available for
people who work with the 11-18 age
group.
Images and issues have been adapted
to address this age group and topics
such as sexual relationships, domestic
abuse and forced marriages are
addressed. We have also created a course for young people themselves. Many of
our members now have junior safeguarding children boards who require the
training; but this course is also suitable for peer mentors and young volunteers.
Both courses are available to members who have Awareness of Child Abuse and
Neglect as their core membership course, at no extra cost.

e-Academy celebrates 100,000th
learner studying Awareness of
Child Abuse and Neglect course
September was a record month for all members
getting their learners through the Awareness of
Child Abuse and Neglect course.
Abby Dacres, e-Academy Manager, said “In

September alone we saw 5,750 learners passing

the course and with over 110,000 learners

currently studying, there are real signs that our
members are recognising the value of e-learning
and driving its adoption throughout their organisations.
Our Account Managers have been working hard to help our members achieve real benefits from their
investment and this is showing, not only in increased learner numbers, but also in the enquiries that we
are receiving from potential new members.”
The 100,000th learner was Andrea Embleton from Northumberland Tyne and Wear NHS Trust who also
had another reason to feel proud as they have managed to get 2174 members of staff trained via
e-learning in the month of September. Fiona Kettle, Training & Development Administration Manager, said
“This is a very high profile topic area for us at the moment and we have a real organisational push to get
all staff through the programme. Having e-learning has helped us to train a lot of people very quickly and
to a high standard. It has also meant that our face-to-face trainers have been freed to concentrate on the
front line professionals who need specialist training.”
Well done to the Northumberland
Tyne and Wear Hospital Trust team!
Angela Baguley, Safeguarding Children e-Academy
Member Support Administrator, said “The NTW team
(pictured) have worked really hard to get vast numbers of
learners through from a standing start and have needed
very little support from me. We felt that we should
recognise this achievement and so we arranged for a
special pat on the back in recognition of their efforts.”
Pictured are the NTW team – well done
for getting 2174 learners passed!
The last few months has seen an increase of interest in membership of the e-Academy and with many
more poised to join us in the next two months, we are anticipating having a major share of the
Safeguarding Boards in the country and with members renewing for the third year running, we are really
proving that membership is providing a cost effective solution for our members.
In addition to this we have seen a 294% increase in demand for other courses since last year; this is yet
another indicator of the trust that our members are now placing in e-learning being able to help them not
only achieve their objectives, but to help them make the most of the face-to-face training programmes they
have in place.
