Climate Change - Consequences
and a Strategy for
African Countries
For many years, African countries have dealt with extreme climates, however, within the
past few years, climate change has become a serious threat to ecosystems, economies, culture,
and the well-being of people and their governments. Although the continent emits some of the
lowest levels of carbon dioxide, it is one of the regions most affected by climate change.
Droughts, flooding, crop failure and destruction of ecosystems are all consequences of rising
global temperatures. Organizations such as the Wildlife and Environment Society of South
Africa (WESSA) have worked to conserve the environment in the continent while educating the
population to create a sustainable lifestyle and make environmentally safe choices.
Climate change may severely hinder development within Africa due to unstable
environmental conditions. Temperature changes within the continent are almost double the
global average. Drought and flooding may result from changes in rainfall, mainly affecting areas
around the Sahara and in southern Africa. Desertification may also affect areas surrounding the
Sahara, causing displacement of people. Heat waves and disease may increase and have severe
impacts on populations, causing illnesses and even death. Serious consequences have resulted
due to climate change and are on track to worsen if not dealt with before irreversible damage is
done.
Famine, disasters, and migrations are all liable results of climate change. Droughts may
cause severe crop failure and water shortages, resulting in thousands of fatalities. Flooding can
destroy homes and infrastructure, causing migration and economic failure. Migrations from
problemed areas are plausible actions due to the inability to survive and support life within
regions. In addition, entire ecosystems may be destroyed along with the extinction of certain
species.
In order to aid African countries in the combat quest climate change, the World Bank is
providing financial support for education, research, and technology that adapts to changing
environments. Programs throughout the continent focus on financial support for sustainable
water, forest, and land management, agricultural productivity, the promotion of clean energy to
prevent deforestation, and preparedness for severe climate changes. These programs will assist
vulnerable communities to adapt, in part of the planning for coming climate shocks.
It is the responsibility of the African Union to prevent and treat climate change before the
inevitable effects completely destroy ecosystems, economies, lifestyles, and the integrity of
nations throughout the continent. Delegates must work together to create comprehensive
advancements and create strategies in order to protect their countries, while also improving
overall standards throughout the continent.
Points to Consider:
What effect does climate change have on your country?
What has your country done to reverse or treat the effects of climate change?
What steps can your country take to help to reduce climate change?
