DIAGRAMS, CHARTS AND GRAPHS Presenting tables of numbers can be very informative but they may lack visual impact. You may want the user to recognise similarities and differences instantly. A diagram, chart or graph can help by summarising the key features of the data and representing them graphically. Tasks 1. a) b) Label the different types of diagrams below. Which kinds of data do they visualise best? 2. Create the pie chart below. Highlight the data; tab: Insert; group: Diagrams chose Pie double click to change title move the slices manually highlight and change font size and type move diagram 3. Change the look of the pie chart by using the different diagram tools. © Eva Bauer 4. Deutschhaus-Gymnasium (grammar school in Würzburg, Germany) has made available the following outside temperature data. Decide on a suitable diagram form to plot the temperature profile from 7 July 2016 to 14 July 2016. Date Temperature in °C 07/07/2016 08/07/2016 09/07/2016 10/07/2016 11/07/2016 12/07/2016 13/07/2016 14/07/2016 19.5 21.5 22.4 24.7 24.3 19.5 18.8 15.8 Tab. 1: Outside temperatures of eHive DEU-DHG-1 5. a) Open a new Excel spreadsheet and rename the worksheet by double-clicking its name and typing in “outside temperature”. b) Create a diagram suitable for plotting a temperature profile. c) Find an appropriate chart title. d) Add appropriate axes titles to the chart. e) Remove the chart legend. f) Compare your line chart with the diagram on the BeeBIT website: www.beebit.de. The BeeBIT eHives have different sizes, resulting in different weights. Use the data below to plot the different countries’ eHive sizes in a suitable chart. Add an appropriate title. eHive SWE-EBS-1 (Sweden) AUT-BIE-1 (Austria) DEU-FKG-1 (Germany) ITA-LFV-1 (Italy) Weight in kg 62 47 28 27 6. If there is still time left, you can change the look of the diagram as you like. You can, for instance, add a background to the diagram or change the font type or colour. 7.
