High time need for educating people about perils of pollutions
The Bhopal disaster, also referred to as the Bhopal gas tragedy, was a gas leak incident in India,
considered the world's worst industrial disaster.
It occurred on the night of 2–3 December 1984 at the Union Carbide India Limited (UCIL) pesticide plant
in Bhopal, Madhya Pradesh. Over 500,000 people were exposed to methyl isocyanides (MIC) gas and other
chemicals. The toxic substance made its way into and around the shanty towns located near the plant Said
According to Dr.C.Sharath Kumar, Director & Chief Fertility Surgeon, Mediwave IVF & Fertility
Research Hospital, Mysore,
The initial effects of exposure were coughing, severe eye irritation and a feeling of suffocation,
burning in the respiratory tract, blepharospasm, breathlessness, and stomach pains and vomiting.
People awakened by these symptoms fled away from the plant. Those who ran inhaled more than
those who had a vehicle to ride. Owing to their height, children and other people of shorter stature
inhaled higher concentrations.
On the occasion of National Pollution Control Day as observed on 8th December 2015, Tuesday, at
Mediwave IVF & Fertility Research Hospital, in association with Mysore Clinical Society, and
Mysore Elite Round Table-256 a Free Lungs Check up Camp was conducted.
In a recent directive, the National Green Tribunal (NGT) sought a public health advisory on pollution
from the Delhi government, to warn people about deteriorating air quality in the capital and suggest
ways to deal with it said Dr C.S.K
They have repeatedly pointed out that an exercise to measure poor air quality, without educating
people about the health risks associated with breathing it in, was a futile one said Dr C.S.K
“What is the point of providing data about air quality without an alert system that helps educate
people about the necessary steps they should take?”
“How does a layman translate the data into something that affects him?” said Dr C.S.K
During the drafting process, experts had discussed the need for issuing advisories or an alert system,
but these ideas never took any concrete shape, said sources said Dr C.S.K.
“Air quality monitoring is important, but if the information generated doesn’t reach those who need
to know and motivate protective action, then monitoring does little good” said Dr C.S.K.
It would be beneficial for Delhi, due to the rapid real-time changes in air quality,
“Pollution levels in Delhi can vary on an hour-to-hour or day-to-day basis. Health advisories can
communicate the risks of pollution in a way the public can easily understand said Dr C.S.K.
