employer, and welcomes applications from ethnic
minorities, other under-represented groups and from
all sections of the community. The promotion of equal
opportunities underpins all the College’s activities.
The College, as a provider of educational services and
as an employer, has policies which seek to combat
discrimination in any form, particularly that derived
from differences in race, gender, religion or belief,
sexual orientation, age or disability. All members
of the College staff and students are expected to

Disability
••••••••••••••••••••••••••••••••••••••
As an equal opportunities employer we are committed
to providing equality of access to employment and
to development opportunities for people from all
parts of the community. We particularly encourage
applications from disabled people who are underrepresented amongst our employees. In addition,
disabled people have particular rights under the
Equality Act 2010.
What is a disability?
••••••••••••••••••••••••••••••••••••••
The definition used in the Equality Act 2010 is:‘A physical or mental impairment which has a
substantial and long-term adverse effect on his/her
ability to carry out normal day-to-day activities’.
Examples include the ability to lift, carry, otherwise
move everyday objects; manual dexterity; mobility;
speech, hearing or eyesight; memory or ability to
concentrate, learn or understand.
To support our aim of removing barriers to
employment for disabled people, we are committed
to making any necessary reasonable adjustments to
provision to ensure that disabled students and other
disabled people are not substantially disadvantaged.
The College has been awarded the Jobcentre Plus
Disability Symbol, and is committed to interviewing
all disabled applicants who meet the minimum
essential criteria for the job.
Asylum and Immigration
Act 1996
••••••••••••••••••••••••••••••••••••••
We are required by law to ensure that anyone working
for us is entitled to live and work in this country. You
must therefore be eligible to work in the UK, and
will be asked to provide documentary evidence on
appointment. For more information, please contact
the Human Resources Department.
Disclosure of a Criminal
Record
••••••••••••••••••••••••••••••••••••••
Bradford College is committed to the fair treatment
of its staff, potential staff or users of its services,
and welcomes applications from a wide range of
candidates, including those with criminal records.
Please see the College’s Policy on the Recruitment of
Ex-Offenders below.
Under the Rehabilitation of Offenders Act 1974,
Bradford College requests all applicants for all posts
to declare details of ‘unspent’ convictions.
Please declare any unspent offences, sentences or
cautions, reprimands and final warnings, with dates.
You are also advised to disclose any charges which
are or may be pending. We will look at any ‘unspent’
convctions in relation to the post you have applied
for, before making any decision.
Remember: custodial sentences of more than 2½
years can never become spent.
There are a number of posts within the College which
are exempt from the Rehabilitation of Offenders Act
1974 by virtue of the Rehabilitation of Offenders
Act (Exemption) Order 1975. These posts normally
involve working with children or vulnerable adults (e.g.
lecturers, teachers, nursery and play staff, support
workers). If the post for which you are applying is
an exempt post, you must declare all convictions –
spent and unspent – and any cautions or bindovers.
All appointments to exempt posts at Bradford College
will be offered subject to the successful applicant
obtaining a Standard or an Enhanced Disclosure and
Barring Service (DBS) and this requirement will be
clearly stated in the details for the job.
In the event of employment, any failure
to disclose such convictions could result in
disciplinary action by the College that could lead
to your dismissal.
Policy On The Recruitment
Of Ex-offenders
••••••••••••••••••••••••••••••••••••••
As an organisation using the Disclosure and Barring
Service (DBS) to assess applicants’ suitability for
positions of trust, Bradford College complies fully
with the DBS Code of Practice and undertakes to
treat all applicants for positions fairly. It undertakes
not to discriminate unfairly against any subject
of a Disclosure on the basis of conviction or other
information revealed. A copy of the DBS Code of
Practice is available on request.
Bradford College is committed to the fair treatment
of its staff, potential staff or users of its services,
regardless of race, gender, religion, sexual
orientation, responsibilities for dependants, age,
physical/mental disability or offending background.
We actively promote equality of opportunity for
all with the right mix of talent, skills and potential
and welcome applications from a wide range of
candidates, including those with criminal records.
We select all candidates for interview based on their
skills, qualifications and experience, in accordance
with the College’s Recruitment and Selection Policy
and Procedures.
A Disclosure is only requested after a thorough
risk assessment has indicated that one is both
proportionate and relevant to the position
concerned. For those positions where a Disclosure
is required, the job details will contain a statement
that a Disclosure will be requested in the event of
the individual being offered the position. Applicants
will be requested to disclose, in complete confidence,
any existing criminal record.
Bradford College
guarantees that this information will only be seen by
those who need it as part of the recruitment process.
We aim to ensure that all those involved in the
recruitment process have been suitably trained to
identify and assess the relevance and circumstances
of offences. We also ensure that they have received
appropriate guidance and training in the relevant
legislation relating to the employment of exoffenders, e.g. the Rehabilitation of Offenders Act
1974.
At interview, or in a separate discussion, we ensure
that an open and measured discussion takes place
on the subject of any offences or other matter that
might be relevant to the position. Failure to reveal
information that is directly relevant to the position
sought could lead to withdrawal of an offer of
employment.
We undertake to discuss any matter revealed
in a Disclosure with the person seeking the
position before withdrawing a conditional offer of
employment.
Having a criminal record will not necessarily bar you
from working with Bradford College. This will depend
on the nature of the position and the circumstances
and background of your offences.
References
••••••••••••••••••••••••••••••••••••••
It is Bradford College’s policy to normally take
up references at the ‘offer’ stage. Any offer of
employment will be subject to satisfactory references.
The College has a policy of asking for two referees.
One should be your current or most recent employer,
and should be someone who is authorised to speak
for the employer. The College reserves the right to
take up references from previous employers.
Health Assessment
••••••••••••••••••••••••••••••••••••••
Any offer of employment will be subject to a
satisfactory health assessment. Successful candidates
will be asked to complete a health questionnaire as
part of their pre-employment checks.. In some cases,
a medical examination may be required.
