Application Instructions - LifeGuard Active Rust Primer

LifeGuard Active Rust Primer
Universal Marine & Industrial Primer
APPLICATION INSTRUCTIONS
Application Procedure
LifeGuard Active Rust Primer is a single component waterborne
acrylic copolymer rust neutralizing primer that goes directly over
clean tight rust, clean tight paint and all bare metals. Two coats of
LifeGuard provide long-term barrier coat protection from further rust
in all environments, including immersion. As a universal primer, it
requires a suitable topcoat. Any type of marine or industrial topcoat
will adhere well to LifeGuard.
Surface Preparation
Surface must be clean and in sound condition. Remove all oil, dust,
grease, dirt, loose rust and other foreign material per SSPC-SP1 to
ensure adequate adhesion.
Minimum surface preparation is Hand Tool Cleaning per SSPC-SP2.
Leave only clean tight rust and clean tight paint. Flush prepared area
with plenty of fresh water to reduce salt crystals and other surface
contaminants. Flash rust or clean brown tightly adhering rust may be
present when applying the primer. No need for rust inhibitors.
High pressure water cleaning (HP WC) at a minimum of 7,000 PSI per
SSPC-SP WJ-4 is the most efficient preparation method, removing all
surface contaminants, loose rust and loose paint in one pass. Waterbased detergents can be used if needed. Always flush with fresh
water after detergents or other degreasing agents have been used.
May use hot water instead of detergents to remove oils.
If abrasive blasting or wet abrasive blasting is used, brush off blast
cleaning is sufficient (SSPC-SP7 or SP-7 [WAB] –wet abrasive blasting).
LifeGuard Active Rust Primer will adhere to a near polished surface.
Unlike most coatings, LifeGuard does not depend on a substrate's
"anchor" profile. Abrasive blasting is not required. As a thin film
primer (3 mils total DFT), it is best if the steel surface profile is 2 mils
or less.
Environmental Conditions
Air temperature:
33°F [1°C] min, 120°F [49°C] max
Steel temperature:
33°F [1°C] min, 120°F [49°C] max
Steel temperature must be at least 3°F above the dew point.
Relative Humidity:
90%.
Application Equipment
The primer can be applied with conventional or airless spray
equipment, natural or synthetic brush, or ¼” short nap roller. If rolling
the first coat over a heavily pitted surface, work the primer in well
with a brush to ensure no voids or trapped air pockets.
Airless spray:
Air spray:
tip: 0.015"-0.017" (Graco 515 or 517 tip)
tip: 0.066”
25-60 PSI atomizing pressure
LifeGuard Active Rust Primer is a stable liquid. Just turn the container
upside down and rock back and forth 12-14 times before opening. The
primer is single-component - no mixing is required. Never use
thinner. Use distilled water only. Never dilute more than 10%.
Before each use, pour LifeGuard into a non-metallic container. Never
pour the unused portion back or dip the brush directly into the
original container.
Rust introduced into the container will
contaminate the primer. The container may be opened and closed
repeatedly.
1. Stripe coat all welds, rough spots, pits, edges and corners. Work
the primer well into the surface with a quality brush while wet to
ensure 100% coverage without air pockets/voids. LifeGuard dries
quickly (touch in 15 minutes). Do not rework after the drying
process has started. LifeGuard chemically reacts with the existing
rust so 100% coverage of the first coat is essential.
2. Apply a thin (3 mils WFT) coat in even, parallel passes. Overlap
each pass 50% to avoid bare areas, pinholes and voids.
3. Allow to dry 2 hours at 68°F. Apply second thin (3 mils WFT) coat.
Each coat dries to 1.5 mils DFT. Total primer system is 3 mils DFT.
Work can be interrupted with no deterioration in quality.
4. Clean all equipment immediately after use with fresh water.
5. LifeGuard requires 24 hours to cure at 68°F before applying a top
coat. Depending on humidity, air flow and temperature, it may
require 36-72 hours to fully cure. Ensure good ventilation when
working in confined spaces. Do not apply a top coat prior to
LifeGuard fully curing. LifeGuard is UV resistant, so you may apply
the topcoat within 6 months. Fresh water rinse the primed
surface if significant time has passed or if surface contaminants
are present or suspected (white rag rub test).
6. Apply a suitable topcoat formulated for the job directly to the
primed surface. No other prep required. LifeGuard is compatible
with all industrial and marine topcoats, including all high
performance solvent-based, water-based and 100% solids
epoxies, polyurethanes, polysiloxanes, alkyds, acrylic copolymers
and chlorinated rubber coatings.
Safety
LifeGuard Active Rust Primer does not contain any organic solvents
and therefore does not present the dangers normally related to
solvents.
It is non-toxic, nonflammable, non-hazardous and
biodegradable. If used in confined areas, maintain adequate
ventilation and sufficient fresh air during application and drying.
Safety goggles and a dust mask are sufficient when exposed to mist.
Suitable respiratory protection for confined spaces when spray
application. For further details – see the Safety Data Sheet.
