to make a fire, foraging for wild edibles, and living on the wild side of life, this week at the Harris Center

Wanderers
June 27 to 30, for grades 6 through 8
Yellow triangles will lead us as we hike the vista-filled ridge that inspired the
creation of the Appalachian Trail. Opened in 1923, this 21-mile route follows
the Wapack Ridge from the base of Mount Watatic (Ashburnham, MA) to the
slope of North Pack Monadnock (Greenfield, NH).
Wanderers will begin our adventure with a prep day of organizing food and gear and hauling it in
to our backcountry shelter basecamp at Windblown Cross Country Ski Area in New Ipswich, NH
before returning home for a good night’s rest.
The next day, we’ll hike 9 miles from the Wapack Trail’s southern terminus in Ashburnham,
MA to our Windblown basecamp. On Days 3 and 4, we’ll hike six miles a day from Barrett
Mountain to Temple Mountain, then on to Pack and North Pack Monadnock. We’re looking for
kids ready to practice backcountry and group expedition skills. Must be able to hike 9 hilly miles
in a day over southern NH hills. We’ll need a few parent volunteers to help with transportation.
June 27, 9 a.m. to 3:00 p.m.
June 28 to 30, overnight at Windblown
June 30, pick up at 3:30 p.m.

July 11 to 15, for grades 6 through 8
Paddlers is a five-day, overnight, wilderness experience on Spoonwood Pond in Nelson − a remote
pond accessible by canoe through Lake Nubanusit. On the first day, campers will come to the
Harris Center for a day of orientation. We’ll get to know one another and prepare for our shared
voyage before heading home for a good night’s rest. The next day, we’ll depart for Spoonwood
Pond, where each day is an adventure waiting to unfold. Moose have been sighted crossing
the pond in the moonlight, and the loon’s call is the dinner bell. If we’re lucky, we might catch
a glimpse of one of the area’s resident bald eagles. Paddlers will come home with increased
self-confidence, low-impact camping skills, and a new awareness of their surroundings.
July 11, 9 a.m. to 3 p.m.
July 12 to 15, overnight at Spoonwood
July 15, pickup at 3 p.m.
