Battery Energy Storage System 2MW Battery Storage System December 5, 2016 Project Scope and Description • Install a new Battery Energy Storage System (BESS) next to the new Grandview Substation. • Build a new 69kV transmission line to connect the BESS to the existing Kellogg switching substation at the UOC. • This BESS will store energy to mitigate intermittent resources and inadvertent energy at the interconnection. Project Benefits and Highlights • Project will be one of the fastest responding storage systems in Southern California. • The new (BESS) will help to regulate our interconnection with LADWP to operate within demand thresholds. • It is scalable so that we can gain experience on how to use the storage technology to determine full scale energy storage projects in the future. Project Benefits and Highlights (Cont.) • It will help mitigate intermittency of the renewable sources such as solar generation. • Capable of providing emergency power to start GWP’s Power Plant generators in case of a major system outage. • It incorporates this new technology into GWP’s renewable resource portfolio. Project Schedule • Ground Breaking: November 16, 2016 • Construction Start: November 17, 2016 • Projected Project Completion: By April, 2017. • Small Scale – scalable • Learn to integrate with system • Understand programming to charge/discharge system • Repowering project allows for bigger system • 20 - 40 MW BESS • Battery needs source to charge
