The City of Grass Valley is under a Voluntary Water Reduction

The City of Grass Valley is under a Voluntary Water Reduction Program. Please follow the
tips below to help meet the 25% reduction requirements.
KITCHEN
Hand wash dishes efficiently, scrape dishes and
rinse all at one time.
Use dishwasher for full loads only.
Defrost without water, plan ahead to thaw frozen
foods.
Buy Energy Star appliances and install aerators in
kitchen faucet.
BATHROOM
Install low-flow shower heads.
Take shorter showers. (Showers kept under 5
minutes can save you about 15 gallons per
shower!)
If you take a bath, fill bathtub less than halfway.
(You can save 10-15 gallons per bath.)
Install aerators on bathroom faucets.
Turn water off when brushing teeth and soaping
hands.
Check for toilet leaks. Toilet leaks are the most
common, and often the most costly water wastes
in the average home. Finding a toilet water leak is
the first step to decreasing water waste. Check to
see if you have a toilet leak by using food coloring
or dye tablets. Check the toilet flapper inside the
tank to see if it is properly situated. Drop the dye
tablet into the toilet tank and lightly stir it. After
approximately 15-30 minutes have passed, check
the bowl for color. If color appears, there is a toilet
water leak. Free samples of these dye tablets
can be obtained at Grass Valley City Hall, 125 E.
Main Street, (sample includes 2 tablets).
LANDSCAPE
Irrigate your yard in the morning or evening when
temperatures are cooler.
Check your sprinkler system frequently and adjust
sprinklers so only your lawn is watered and not the
house, sidewalk, or street. Install precise
landscaping irrigation, use rotating nozzles to save
water and eliminate wasteful runoff.
Choose water-efficient irrigation system such as
drip irrigation for your trees, shrubs, and flowers.
Water deeply but less frequently to create healthier
and stronger landscapes.
Plant drought-resistant trees and plants.
CLEANUP
Use broom to clean driveways, sidewalks, patios
and walkways.
Wash cars/boats at car wash facilities where water
is recycled.
ACTIVITIES
Install a pool/spa cover to reduce evaporation and
filter backwash.
If draining a pool is necessary, find a use for the
water.
Check your pool and pool plumbing for leaks.
LAUNDRY ROOM
Use washing machine for full loads only.
Buy Energy Star appliances.
