PROPER SET UP FOR HOME-CAGE EUTHANASIA This port should be left open to allow displaced oxygen to exit the cage. This tube carries the CO2 from the flow meter and should fit tightly into the port. Watch the ball to set the appropriate flow rate for the cage you’re euthanizing. This example shows the rate for a small mouse cage. 1. Remove the lid and wirebar feed hopper. 2. Place the euthanasia lid on the home-cage. 3. Turn on the CO2 tank. 4. Turn on the flow meter to the proper rate for the cage being euthanized (stated in euthanasia SOP). 6. Once all animals have ceased breathing, allow 2 minutes to elapse to ensure death. 7. Turn off the CO2 tank. 8. Turn off the flow meter. 9. Perform secondary method and place in freezer. Turn this knob to set the flow rate and to turn it on and off. Flow rate for Transgenics: Small Mouse Cage = 1.89 L/min., Large Mouse Cage = 5.16 L/min., Rat Cage = 7.02 L/min.
