January is going to be a fun-filled month, full of basketball games for all ages, a retreat, a party sponsored by the student counsel and lots of snow and outdoor sports. Nothing beats winter in Northern Michigan, especially if you measure by snow accumulation! How many New Year's Resolutions have you made that have changed your life forever? I made one many years ago, and I believe it played a big part in bringing me and my family to Harbor Light. Every year several churches throughout the world begin the New Year with prayer and fasting and many years ago, I joined the movement. Although God's calendar year does not begin in January, ours does, and by dedicating the first part of the year to seeking the Lord, praying for the things and people on His heart, and asking Him for His direction, my life has been changed. Anytime you set aside food and/or other things to seek the Lord in prayer, in reading His Word, in worship etc., there will always be good fruit. The Bible says: Draw near to God and He will draw near to you. James 4:8 You will seek me and find me when you seek me with all your heart. Jeremiah 29:13 I love those who love me, and those who seek me will find me. monthly gift to HLCS? We're encouraging our families and friends to consider regular gifts. When you give to Harbor Light Christian School you are making an investment in the lives of our students. Your gift not only helps shape and educate them for today, but will impact our world for generations to come. You can give one-time gifts online, or in intervals that are convenient for you. Giving is easy online on our website! Donations are also welcome by check. _______________________ Have you seen...? We need news clippings of our students and staff for our bulletin boards and marketing materials. Please send them in when you see them. Of course, if anyone wants this job on a regular basis (watching and clipping), you're hired! _______________________ Box Top & UPC Fundraising We can earn money for HLCS by clipping Box Tops coupons from hundreds of participating products and UPC symbols from Spartan brand products. So please clip and save your Box Tops and Spartan UPC labels and turn them in at the office. Thank you! (We no longer collect Campbell's labels.) _______________________ Over 20 area churches are represented by the students and staff at HLCS. Proverbs 8:17 If my people who are called by my name, will humble themselves, and pray and seek my face, and turn from their wicked ways, then I will hear from Heaven, and forgive their sin, and heal their land. Now my eyes will be open and ears attentive to prayer made in this place. 2 Chronicles 7:14-15 As we begin this New Year, I encourage you and your family to join Harbor Light Christian School, Harbor Light Community Chapel, and millions of others in the body of Christ to honor the Lord and put Him first. Let's expect that as we seek God and His Kingdom first and hunger and thirst for His right ways, He will fill us and add to us everything else we need. Many of us from the school and church will be meeting in the Prayer Chapel (behind the cafeteria upstairs) at 6:00 am or 7:00 pm for corporate prayer daily, you are welcome to join us January 9 through January 29. If you have specific prayer requests, let us know in the office and we will be praying for these diligently during the fast. May God's richest and best be yours in 2017, Ryan Coxon Administrator From the School Board ______________________________________________________________________ To be, or not to be . . . Weird This summer, Jews for Jesus wore T-shirts in their NYC witnessing campaign with the slogan "Keeping Jewish weird since 32 A.D." For young people today, weird has a positive, not a negative, connotation. Weird now means different and unique, qualities that younger people value and identify with. The original meaning not only described something as unique and different but it also intimated an element of the supernatural--something to do with a special act of God. Therefore, it would seem appropriate to identify the incarnation of Jesus as truly weird. Much effort is spent by many people to establish their uniqueness. But God has already done so; each of us has been given unique gifts and talents. Ironically, our efforts to be unique often result in conformity not uniqueness. Titus 2:14 tells us God "gave himself for us, that he might redeem us from all iniquity, and purify unto himself a peculiar (think weird) people, zealous of good works" (KJV). Perhaps a good resolution for this new year is to let God work in each of us a godly weirdness. ~ Rebecca McCray, HLCS School Board President Check it out! _______________________ Remember! This year our Spaghetti Dinner is called "The Art of Gathering." We need EVERYONE to pitch in! WE NEED SILENT AUCTION ITEMS! These are tangible items from local businesses or people. (Examples: Snow shoes, camera, pottery, art, services, etc.) We also can use GIFT CARDS for our gift card board that we will be having this year! And we can't forget about DESSERTS! I have a couple people who have volunteered to make desserts on a decorative plate or display that will be auctioned off with the dessert. This is our biggest fundraiser of the year and we need each and every one of our families to pitch in to make this year an even more FUN and SUCCESSFUL event! Right now we have ONE item...we need to get the office FULL of things to auction off! So roll up those sleeves, pick up that phone, and get a hold of the people you know who would be willing to donate silent auction items, gift cards, trips, services, etc... Please repsond ASAP with what you are willing to do! Thank you all for your help! God Bless! We're excited to get back to creating in the Art room again after an amazing break. We have lots of fun multicultural art units beginning this semester, as well as auction items to create for the Spaghetti Dinner. With that in mind I am asking that you search your storage and basements for any unused wooden chairs that we could use for a special project this year. We are praying for between 5 and 7 of them total. Any shape or size is fine, but we are hoping for them to be completely wooden. Thank you so much for your help and prayers! Elizabeth Mrozinski Yearbook The 2016-2017 yearbook staff is hard at work editing pages of next year's yearbook! They have begun to collect sports photos and would welcome any additional photos you have from this season! To make our yearbook great, we need a variety of pictures to choose from. Please send any images that you have of classroom activities, sporting events, field trips, spirit week, etc., to [email protected]. We need your help, and would LOVE it if you would share as many of your images as possible! Seniors and parents of seniors, please note this timeline: https://www.petersons.com/college-search/planning-list-twelfthstudents.aspx#/sweeps-modal. As a review: FAFSA's should be completed for an early look at what you will be expected to contribute to your student's college costs. Applications should be in! Our English teachers are happy to edit students' college essays. Students should be asking for letters of recommendation now and not wait until the last minute. Final college visits will help in the decision making process. If your student will be attending NCMC, it is time for them to meet with an admissions counselor. If your student will be doing a DTS with YWAM, have them meet with me (you may join them) to learn how to explore the various bases and complete their applications. I would love to sit down with you and work through this process with you and your student. ~ Pat Wendt, Counseling, Outreach and International Coordinator Student Chapel Services ______________________________________________________________________ Student chapel is on Wednesday mornings.
