6 Pewter Game Tokens*
16 The Spirit of Christmas Cards
16 Hot Chocolate Cards
28 Title Deed Cards
33 Gifts
12 Christmas Trees
Play Money and Money Tray
2 Dice
Place the board flat down on a sturdy surface. Place the Hot
Chocolate and The Spirit of Christmas cards facedown on their
designated spaces on the board. Each player picks one token to
represent him/her as they travel around the board. Place the chosen
token on the ALL ABOARD space.
The Elf Banker:
Select a player who will act as Elf Banker during game play. The Elf
Banker gives each player a total of $1,500 divided as follows: 2 each
of $500s, $100s and $50s; 6 $20s; 5 each of $10s, $5s and $1s. All
remaining money is to be
sorted in the Money Tray
and set aside for game play.
*Note: The Elf Banker’s personal
account is to be kept separate from
the Elf Bank.
The Elf Bank:
*Pewter Tokens: Please note the tokens in this game are made of the highest quality
pewter. Due to the flexibility of pewter, these tokens may bend. If they do, carefully bend
them back into shape.
The Elf Bank holds all money, Gifts, Christmas Trees, and Title Deed
cards prior to purchase. The Elf Bank is also responsible for paying
each player $200 if they pass ALL ABOARD, as well as paying and
collecting any money when Hot Chocolate or The Spirit of Christmas
cards are played, and when the player lands on the TRANSPORT
spaces on the board. Mortgages are also paid to the Elf Bank.
Objective:
The Play:
The object of the game is to become the most prosperous player by
buying, renting, and selling The Polar Express properties. You’ll use
Gifts and Christmas Trees to decorate properties and raise your rents.
Starting with the Elf Banker, each player throws the dice. The player with
the highest number goes first, and play passes to the left. With all tokens
starting on the ALL ABOARD space, the player moves their token

Make more money by having Gifts and Christmas Trees placed on your
properties as the rent is always higher for decorated properties.
Buying and Mortgaging
Properties:
*Note: If the owner of the property fails to notice another player on his/her property and fails
to ask for rent, the owner may NOT ask for rent after that player throws the dice on his/her next turn.
When landing on any unowned
property, the player has the option
of purchasing the property from
the Elf Bank at its printed price. If
purchased, the player receives the Title
Deed card for the property and places it face up in front of him/her.
Gifts:
When you own all the properties of a certain color group, you have
the option of buying Gifts and placing them on any one of those
properties. Gifts are purchased from the Elf Bank. You must place
the Gifts evenly across a color group, a single property may not have
more than one Gift more than other properties in the group. For
example, one property cannot have four Gifts if another property in
the group has only two Gifts. You can have up to four Gifts on each
property in a color group.
If the player chooses not to buy the property, any player can then
bid any price to purchase the property. The highest bidder receives
the Title Deed card!
All undecorated properties may be mortgaged to the Elf Bank. All
Gifts and Christmas Trees must first be sold back to the Elf Bank at
half the cost. The mortgage value is printed on the back of each Title
Deed card. Once a player mortgages a property, he/she must turn
the card over. No rent is to be collected; however, the Title Deed
card is kept by the player.
The rent due once the property is decorated with Gifts is indicated on
the Title Deed card for the property. Paying twice the rent if another
player lands on your property continues only if the property is
undecorated and you own all the properties in the group. If you decide
to sell your Gifts back to the Elf Bank, it must also be done evenly.
To lift a mortgaged property, the owner must pay the Elf Bank the
amount of the mortgage plus 10% interest.
Christmas Trees:
Once a player has four Gifts on each property in a color group, he/
she has the option of purchasing a Christmas Tree from the Elf Bank
and using it to decorate any property in the color group. The player
must return the four Gifts to the Elf Bank and use only the Christmas
Tree. The price of the Christmas Tree is indicated on the Title Deed
card. You can only place one Christmas Tree on each property. The
rent due once a property has been decorated with a Christmas Tree is
also indicated on the Title Deed card.
Paying Rent:
When you land on a property that is owned by another player, you
must pay the owner of that property a rent payment. If all Title Deed
cards of a color group (e.g. Hero Girl, Hero Boy, and Santa’s Sleigh)
are owned by the same player, the property owner may charge
twice the rent for undecorated properties. This rule applies to
unmortgaged properties only.
*Note Decorating Shortages: If there are not any Gifts or Christmas Trees in the Elf Bank, the player
must wait until another player gives some of their Gifts back to the Elf Bank. If there are only a
limited supply of Gifts and Christmas Trees, the players can bid on them and the highest bidder wins.
