Purpose The Commonwealth in England Barristers’ Association (known as CEBA) exists to
support lawyers from around the Commonwealth who are practising in England and to enable
lawyers in England to support other lawyers who are practising in other Commonwealth
jurisdictions.
Activities CEBA holds high profile and well-attended talks given by eminent people such as
Justices of the Supreme Court, Commonwealth High Court Judges, Judges from the South
African Constitutional Court and High Commissioners.
Free Membership for Students and Pupils Membership is free to students and pupils and is a
very reasonable £10.00 a year for practitioners. Please apply by email to the Membership

name, membership of Inn of Court and email address in the body of your message. Tom Roe
will email you details of forthcoming events.
Bursary for a student or pupil for one month in a legal centre in Sri Lanka
CEBA is inviting BPTC students to enter a competition. The prize is a bursary to carry out
pro bono work in a legal centre in Sri Lanka for one month in 2015. The bursary will be the
cost of return air fares from England to Sri Lanka, nominal per diem subsistence allowance
for one month and free accommodation. The month will be arranged at mutually agreed dates
during 2015.
In order to enter the competition you need to write on “How I could make a difference to a
legal aid centre in a Commonwealth country” in not more than 1,500 words. A panel
consisting of Dame Linda Dobbs, Stephen Leslie QC and Mrs Charlotte Boaitey will judge
the competition. The judges’ decision will be final. Entries must be in hard copy and must be
received by 31st December 2013. Entries must be sent by post to Mr Andrew Otchie (Hon
Secretary), 12, Old Square, Lincoln’s Inn, London, WC2A 3TX. Please provide your postal
address, telephone number and email address. Please contact Andrew Otchie if you do not
receive acknowledgement of receipt within 7 days. All candidates will automatically become
members of CEBA if not already enrolled.
The winner will be expected to become a co-opted member of the CEBA management
committee with the responsibility of contributing to the work of the committee; to have a blog
whilst in Sri Lanka, to produce a written report at the end of the month, and to give a
presentation at the CEBA AGM.
Marshalling and mini-pupillages
The winner of the competition and the two runners-up will each be offered a mini-pupillage in
chambers in which we have members. All those entering the competition will be offered the
opportunity for marshalling and meetings with senior members of CEBA to provide informal
assistance. All entrants will also have first refusal on other CEBA student activities.
