Understanding Formative Assessment Tools
Understanding Formative Assessment Tools
Formative Assessment Tools are useful for creating formative assessments (self assessments) for learners, as opposed
to summative assessments. Through a variety of activities, learners attain knowledge over the course of the assessment
period.
Formative Assessment Tools are can be used to create activities that teach high-level information that is less technical
in nature. Grades are not given for these activities, but feedback can be provided to move learners toward the correct
answers. Because grades aren't given, there is no upkeep required of instructors or course developers after they have
created the activities. Learners can attempt activities an unlimited number of times, while they are available, in order
to master the content.
Formative Assessment Tools platform requirements and
setup
Before you begin: Ensure that your administrator granted you the permissions to edit and manage the following tools:
 Manage Files
 Content
Formative Assessment Tools is compatible with browsers supported in Brightspace platform version 10.4 and later.
Formative Assessment Tools is currently only available in markets where U.S. English is the primary language used to
store and display data.
D2L recommends that you incorporate Formative Assessment activities into a course in an instance of Brightspace
Learning Environment. However, you can use Formative Assessment Tools apart from the Brightspace platform or any
other LMS, as long as they are hosted on a server.
You create Formative Assessment activities by configuring JSON files with your desired data values (see the Data
References topics in their respective tool sections), which are then referenced by an HTML index file. D2L recommends
you have a text editor available to modify the JSON files.
When complete, Formative Assessment activities are incorporated into the Content tool. You can add a Formative
Assessment activity into a module in the Content tool, or embed it into an existing topic in Content.
To get Formative Assessment Tools for your organization, contact your D2L Account Manager.
General activity structure
You can use each Formative Assessment Tool to create activities that have a similar structure. All activities can consist
of the following:
 Pre-activity page - this page is optional. It is useful for providing learners with more comprehensive instructions
and/or to set up a situation that prefaces the question or challenge presented in the activity. This page is

media-enabled so you can include text, videos, images, and links.
Figure 1: Sample pre-activity page including topic title, activity title, content area, and Start Activity button
 Main activity page(s) - depending on the activity type you choose, the main activity is presented on one or multiple
pages that learners must interact with and navigate through. This portion of the activity requires the most planning
and configuring to create, but with many options available, you can customize your activity to suit almost any
purpose. For examples of specific activity types, see the overview topics in their respective tool sections.
 Feedback page(s) - there are two types of feedback for you to choose from, and the type determines how the
feedback displays. For continuous feedback, results and feedback display on each page as the learner completes
that part of the activity and navigates through. For report (summative) feedback, results and feedback for the
whole activity display all at once on one page at the end of the activity. Depending on the activity type you choose,
and the amount of feedback you want to provide, there might be a more suitable feedback type. To find more
information, see the Best practices topics in their respective tool sections.
 Post-activity page - this page is optional. It is useful for providing learners with a summary of the activity,
reinforcing key learning points, or giving tips, hints, or reminders for moving forward. This page is particularly
effective as a follow-up to the continuous feedback option because it can provide learners with summary feedback

for the activity that they don't get while they're working their way through it. This page is media-enabled so you
can include text, videos, images, and links.

Graphic Multi-Select Interactive
About the Graphic Mult i -Se le ct Int e ract i ve tool
The Graphic Multi-Select Interactive tool is useful for creating activities that challenge learners on descriptions of,
differences between, or similarities between multiple related items.
The Graphic Multi-Select Interactive presents a table with a series of items at the top of each column. Each row of the
table contains an item that applies or relates to one or more of the column items. The objective is to have the learner

determine which column items align with each row item. For example, you might ask learners to categorize various
dishes according to different dietary needs.
You'll use the Graphic Multi-Select Interactive most effectively when more than one column item is applicable or
related to each or several of the row items. If row items are applicable or related to only one column item, a Matching
Interactive is a more appropriate option for the activity.
Graphic Mult i -Se le ct Int e ract ive ove r vie w
You can set up a Graphic Multi-Select Interactive activity so that all row options display at one time on one page, or
only one row option displays on a page and learners must complete each one in sequence before moving on to the
next. The following screenshot shows an activity where all row options display on one page:

Formative Assessment Tools
Understanding Formative Assessment Tools
You can set up a Graphic Multi-Select Interactive activity to provide continuous feedback or report feedback. For an
activity that displays only one row option at a time, you must use the continuous feedback option. For an activity that
displays all row options on one page, you must use the report feedback option. The summative feedback report
displays results and feedback. You can provide feedback for each selection, which displays for each incorrect response.
The following screenshot shows a summative feedback report where feedback is given for the row as a whole, instead
of for each selection in a row:

Best practi ces for de ve loping a Graphic Multi - Select Interactive acti vit y
To provide users with an optimal experience, D2L recommends the following when developing your Graphic
Multi-Select Interactive activity:
 While the number of items you can include in either the columns or the rows is not limited, restrict the number to
keep the content within one page in Brightspace Learning Environment; that is, use no more than 5 columns and
no more than 8 rows.
 For images used at the beginning of each row or column, select images with a suitable orientation and resolution
to fit your activity.
 If you include images only, or the accompanying text is not sufficiently explanatory, include alternate text.
 In general, the column items should include a list of things (people, places, activities, processes, etc.) and the row
items should include descriptions, essential traits, requirements, characteristics, etc.

Image Hotspot
About the Image Hot spot t ool
The Image Hotspot tool enables you to transform an image into an interactive assessment or a content exploration
activity. Learners can click areas of the image to reveal either a multiple choice question or some content such as text,
images, videos, or links.
An image with clickable regions is called a "scene". An Image Hotspot activity can include multiple scenes and each
scene can consist of as many clickable regions as you want.
Image Hotspot activities are great for error or issue identification. For example, learners in a Workplace Safety course
could be asked to investigate a scene containing several hazards and identify them. You could follow up by asking them
to explain why it is a hazard, what corrective actions should be taken, or present a multiple choice question asking
specifically what the hazard is. As another example, learners in a Math course could be presented with a problem's
incorrect steps and solution and be asked to identify where the mistakes were made.
You can create an activity based on categories by creating your own image that consists of multiple text boxes grouped
together. When the learner selects a category, they are presented with a question related to that category. You can
even create an interactive diagram. For example, if a piece of content consists of several small pieces, each with
associated details, such as forms, tables, charts, graphs, or diagrams, learners select different parts of the object and
are presented with the relevant content.

Image Hotspot ove rv ie w
You can set up an Image Hotspot activity so that each clickable region delivers content or a multiple choice question.
The following screenshot shows a scene where each clickable region delivers content:
Figure 5: Image Hotspot activity showing content delivery
For Image Hotspot activities that are set up to deliver content for each clickable region, feedback isn't necessary since
learners just read information without needing to respond. For Image Hotspot activities that are set up to pose a
multiple choice question for each clickable region, you can choose to provide feedback to learners after they answer
each question. The following screenshot shows an activity that poses multiple choice questions and provides feedback
after each question is answered:

Best practi ces for de ve loping an Imag e Hotspot acti vit y
To provide users with an optimal experience, D2L recommends the following when developing your Image Hotspot
activity:
 Consider accessible users before choosing to develop an Image Hotspot activity. Due to the nature of the activity,
the learning experience might not be as helpful for learners who are visually impaired. Users can navigate the
scene through keystrokes and screen readers, but the experience might be compromised. To assist visually
impaired learners, include alt text for each image that focuses on the visual cues within the image.
 For the scene in your Image Hotspot activity, select an image with a landscape orientation. Choose an image size
that renders well on the device you intend the activity to be viewed on. In general, a good size to aim for is 880px.
x 500px. Keep in mind that the activity is responsive and images scale down, but they do not scale up.
 To ensure that the multiple choice (MC) questions and content that displays when a user selects a clickable region
displays well, do the following:
 For MC questions, limit the question text to <100 words.
 For MC questions, limit the response option to <=4.

19
Formative Assessment Tools

 For MC questions, limit the response options text to <25 words.
 For text-only content, limit the text to <200 words.
 For image/video-only content, limit the size of the image/video to <800px. x 500px.
 For text and image/video content, limit text to <100 words and the size of the image/video to <400px. x
250px.

Inline Quiz
About the Inline Quiz t ool
The Inline Quiz tool enables instructors to give learners self-assessment opportunities in an activity that has a clean,
modern user interface and customizable features.
The activity can exist in the course as a regular topic or embedded within content. Question types include multiple
choice, all-that-apply, fill-in-the-blank, and arithmetic. Questions are posed one at a time, but can be presented in a
specified order or randomly. Instructors can also write feedback for questions that can be provided continuously (after
each question) or as a report at the end of the quiz.
In line Quiz overv ie w
You can design an Inline Quiz activity to have as many questions as you want, and to use any variety of question types
from those available. Some question types (all-that-apply and multiple choice) can include images, videos, and links in
both the question text and the question options. The following screenshot shows a multiple choice question that is the
second question of four in the activity:
Figure 7: Inline Quiz activity showing a multiple choice question
You can set up an Inline Quiz activity to provide continuous feedback or report feedback. However, continuous
feedback is generally better suited for this kind of activity. You can also force learners to answer questions again right
away if they get them wrong. The following screenshot shows the results and feedback for a fill-in-the-blank question:

Figure 8: Inline Quiz activity showing fill-in-the-blank question with continuous feedback option
Best practi ces for de ve loping an Inline Quiz acti vity
To provide users with an optimal experience, D2L recommends the following when developing your Inline Quiz activity:
 Fill-in-the-blank questions
Since the Inline Quiz tool automatically corrects learners' submissions, take extra care when you construct
fill-in-the-blank questions. Make the correct response definitive to avoid having learners think there are multiple
correct answers. In some cases, you might want to present two or more options for the learner directly after the
fill-in field. For example, "The wall separating the left and right sides of the human heart is called the
______________ (septum/ventricle)." Alternatively, you can provide a list of terms and phrases in the Hint section
of the question. To reduce wrong answers based on spelling, use the same list for all fill-in-the-blank hints.
Note: Fill-in-the-blank questions are not case sensitive.
 Arithmetic questions
Arithmetic questions in the Inline Quiz tool work differently than in Brightspace Learning Environment. The
numbers do not change and the correct answer is not calculated based on a formula. You can think of it as a
fill-in-the-blank question whose fill-in field is below the question text instead of embedded in the sentence, and
only numeric values can be entered.
 Feedback type
When you're deciding on whether feedback should be continuous or summative, consider the length of the quiz,
the complexity of the feedback, and the types of questions being asked. A feedback summary at the end of a

Formative Assessment Tools
Understanding Formative Assessment Tools
ten-question quiz that uses a lot of all-that-apply questions will not be easy for the learner to read and key
messages might be missed. Continuous feedback, in most cases, offers the most learner-friendly experience.
 Media use
You can integrate media (images, videos, and other types) into an Inline Quiz activity on the pre-activity and
post-activity pages, and in questions, hints, and feedback. However, do not overwhelm the quiz with too much
media; if you use it sparingly, it can create a more engaging learning experience.
 Approach to question structure
Consider structuring the question order so that questions build upon one another or are part of a bigger analysis,
rather than creating a quiz consisting of isolated questions. For more structured questioning, remove
randomization of the question sequence and ensure that any relevant information is included either in the
question text or in the hint.
 If you are creating questions that you also want available for use within the Quizzes tool in Brightspace Learning
Environment, format them according to the following:
 Use an asterisk (*) before the multiple choice options to indicate correct answers. If you indicate that there
are multiple correct answers, you should use the all-that-apply question type.
 Use a question mark (?) before content that you want to display in the question’s Hint.
 Use an at sign (@) before the question's feedback content.
 Use two at signs (@@) to denote feedback associated with the multiple choice or all-that-apply option
directly above it.
 If you use Microsoft Word to format your question text, do not let the auto-format apply to the questions'
and options' enumerations, for example, "1." or "a." Question numbers and option lettering should be
treated as text.
 For the Inline Quiz tool, many of the best practices associated with giving traditional tests apply, including:
 If more than one option is correct, use an all-that-apply question. Avoid using "All of the above" or "Options
A and B" as multiple choice options.
 All-that-apply questions should have at least one incorrect answer, that is, don't make all options in an
all-that-apply question as correct answers.
 Avoid questions that ask things like, "Which of the following is not a..." or, "All of these except one is an
example of...".
 Give learners clear instructions on how to answer all-that-apply and fill-in-the-blank questions. For
all-that-apply questions, state, “Select all that apply,” at the end of the question. For fill-in-the-blank
questions, tell your learners if you want them to use American spelling, put periods in acronyms, and so on.
Where feasible, give learners an example of how to format their response.

Matching and Categorization
About the Matching and Cat e g orizat ion t ool
The Matching and Categorization tool enables instructors to create engaging formative self assessments for learners.
Learners use their mouse or keyboard to move images and textboxes to their correct drop zones. You can also add
media to pre- and post-activity pages to make instruction even more unique and informative.
You can create two different kinds of activities with this formative assessment tool:
 Matching activity - has a one-to-one ratio between items and drop zones.
 Categorization activity - has multiple items that correspond to each drop zone. The number of items that belong in
each category displays in the category heading.
The Matching and Categorization tool works well for delivering and assessing lower order cognitive processes in
learners such as remembering and understanding facts. For example, you can ask learners to match key vocabulary
terms with their definitions even before they are formally taught. This can be an engaging way to introduce a lot of new
terminology in one activity.
You can test higher order cognitive processes through Matching and Categorization activities by increasing the
complexity of the content in your draggable items and anchor items. For example, you might ask learners to analyze
quotes from customer service representatives and categorize them as either good or poor customer service. You could
also ask learners in an English class to evaluate a sentence's punctuation and match it to the missing punctuation mark.

Matching and Cate g orization ove r vie w
You can design either a Matching or a Categorization activity using this tool. You can choose the arrangement of the
items and the drop zones for both activities, that is, they can be lined up beside one another, or the items on top and
drop zones side-by-side under them. The following screenshot shows a Matching activity with three items and three
drop zones arranged horizontally, with one item already moved into its corresponding drop zone:

You can set up Matching and Categorization activities to provide continuous feedback or report feedback. If you choose
to provide report feedback, you can include different feedback messages for each response, whether correct or
incorrect. If you choose to provide continuous feedback, learners simply see if their match/categorization is correct or
incorrect with check marks and X's. The following screenshot shows the results and report feedback for a Matching
activity:

Understanding Formative Assessment Tools
Best practi ces for de ve loping a Mat ching or Categorizat ion activ ity
To provide users with an optimal experience, D2L recommends the following when developing your Matching or
Categorization activity:
 Although the number of draggable items or drop zones is not limited, you should restrict the number so that all the
content fits within the screen. Use nine draggable items or less. Use 3 drop zones or less for categorization
activities, and 9 items or less for matching activities.
Note: If you use images for these items/zones, you might want to restrict these numbers further.
 Select images with an appropriate resolution. Images resize to fit the space of the drop zones by scaling down but
they do not scale up.
 In general, avoid using only images to identify the items because the images might become too small for learners
to be able to see clearly.
 If you only include images, or the accompanying text is not sufficiently explanatory, use alternate text.
 This tool is best applied when there are clear distinctions in the content. Matching and Categorization activities do
not apply well to opinion-based content, or items that might align with two or more categories or matches. The
Graphic Multi-Select Interactive tool is better suited for these applications.
 Determine how much feedback you want to provide to determine whether to use continuous or report feedback:
 Continuous: checkmarks and X's show which answers are correct and incorrect.
 Report: the report screen provides an opportunity to deliver more text feedback, and it can be different for
correct and incorrect answers.

Sequencing Interactive
About the Sequencing Int e ract ive t ool
The Sequencing Interactive tool enables instructors to give learners self-assessment opportunities in an activity that has
a clean, modern user interface and customizable features. The activity can exist in the course as a regular topic page or
embedded within content.
Learners use their mouse or keyboard to rearrange the order of a series of items by dragging them to align with anchor
items to indicate a position within the sequence. The titles on the anchor items are customizable, so this activity does
not need to be limited to content that follows a "Step 1, Step 2" structure. Since the activity is dynamic and the tiles
displace to the next anchor if an item is dropped in its place, this activity type can be applied to prioritization, ranking,
and even processes.
Se quencing Inte ract ive ove rv ie w
You can set up your Sequencing activity to provide continuous feedback or report feedback. Continuous feedback is
indicated by green or red bars on the bottom of the tiles, and report feedback shows results and feedback for all items

Best practi ces for de ve loping a Se quencing Interacti ve acti vit y
To provide users with an optimal experience, D2L recommends the following when developing your Sequencing
Interactive activity:
 If possible, use horizontal sequencing and limit the number of items in the sequence to six so that all of your
content fits on the page.
 You can use text, image, or text and image for the items learners drag into sequence. If you use images, make them
highly effective. If you include images only, or the accompanying text is not sufficiently explanatory, include
alternate text.
 Remember that images for draggable items scale down but do not scale up. Portrait orientation images work
better than landscape images for activities with more than four steps.
 Determine how much feedback you want to provide to determine whether to use continuous or report feedback:
 Continuous: colour-coded feedback shows which answers are correct and incorrect.
 Report: the report screen provides an opportunity to deliver more text feedback, and it can be different for
correct and incorrect answers.

Using Formative Assessment Tools
Create an activity
Before you begin the steps to create your activity, D2L recommends you fill in the blank design template you received
with your deployment package as an outline.
1.
Unzip the zipped folder of all the Formative Assessment Tools files you received from your deployment and save it
to your local drive.
2.
Open the folder for the type of Formative Assessment activity you want to create, for example, 'Matching'.
3.
Open the folder called ‘data’.
4.
In the data folder, you’ll see at least one JSON file, for example, matching-data.json. This is the default activity data
file.
5.
To create your own activity, first make a copy of the data file and give it a unique name.
6.
Modify the copy of the file to design your own activity. Refer to the design template you filled out to guide you,
and see the Data References topics in their respective tool sections for the specific values you can set.
7.
After you've input all of your desired values, save the file.
8.
Navigate up to the activity type folder level, for example, 'Matching' and notice the HTML index file(s) present.
9.
Open the HTML file and ensure it is pointing to the correct JSON file. After you have entered the correct JSON file
name, save the file.
Note: If you want to have multiple activities of the same type in the same course in Brightspace Learning
Environment, duplicate the index file for as many activities as you have, and ensure that each is pointing to a
unique JSON file.

5. Click Add.
6. Click the topic you just added to view your activity.
9.
Alternatively, to embed your activity into a topic:
1. Within your existing content topic, edit the HTML source (either with the
using a code editor).
HTML Source Editor, or locally
2. Add an IFrame to your HTML page.
3. Ensure the source attribute for the IFrame matches the path to the activity's HTML index file.
4. Style the IFrame accordingly.
5. Save your changes and overwrite your original content, as required.
10. If you want to change the title of the topic, click the title and edit the text. D2L recommends naming the topic by
the type of activity and its specific name, for example, "Matching - Types of Leadership".
