Headteacher’s Message
The final day of the half term – how time has flown! The first half term is always a busy time for school and it is a good time to
reflect on the learning and events that have taken place. There is an excitement by staff at the opportunities and challenges we
will be offering the children in the year ahead. These have already started in staff taking part in training to offer an exciting
writing project due to start next half term – details to follow. There has already been a visiting author in school, motivating
years 3 and 4 in writing adventure stories; a group of children have visited the school library service and chosen over 200
books which we are borrowing and using within school and some lucky Year 5 and 6 children have recently enjoyed an
exciting day at Ireland Wood challenging themselves in their writing through drama and poetry. Finally, the first edition of
the Adel St John school newspaper has been rolled out tonight. Produced by a KS2 editorial team, the newspaper has been
researched, written and produced by the children themselves. It is bright, informative and a great read. Enjoy reading and
watch out for the next edition which will be produced in the spring.
For this week’s assembly I told a story of friendships. Taken from the bible it told the story of Ruth and Naomi, two women
who formed a friendship and supported each other even when things were tough. The new peer mentors were also introduced
to the children, their role being similar to that of Ruth; recognising when people need support by offering them someone to
talk to, offering their time by listening and standing by them when things are difficult.
Our Harvest Festival was a huge success, with the food collected being delivered to The Trussell Trust Foodbank who are
based at Moortown Methodist Church. They were extremely grateful for the contributions from Harvest Festival and asked
me to pass on their thanks as your donations will go towards supporting families in crisis in the local area.
Please don’t forget to sign up for our parent consultations taking place on Tuesday 3rd and Wednesday 4th November. There
are forms in the entrance but these will be removed after tonight to allow staff to prepare for the evenings. Please read below
for further information specifically relating to the consultations on the evenings.
Have a peaceful break next week; we will see you back at school on 2 nd November

Weekly Prayer
Dear God,
You love us at all times. You know what we are and what we can be.
You are a friend who promises to stick by us forever.
We too would like to be faithful in our friendships.
Please help us today to be true to those around us.
Lord hear our prayer
Amen.
Annual Parent Consultation Evenings
This year parent consultations will take place in the hall. This decision has been made for both safeguarding and timetabling reasons.
Trays including the children’s learning will remain in the class and you can choose to either arrive early to look through these or wait
until after your consultation, viewing them at your leisure. If you feel there is something you wish to speak about confidentially then
please make a separate appointment with your child’s class teacher.
School Meals
Payment is now due for next term; please see below for costs and payment details which can then be passed to Mrs Ramsden in the
office.
Bonfire tickets
Plans are well underway for this year's Bonfire Extravaganza on 7th November. Tickets are now on sale for the event which can be
purchased in the usual manner outside school or via the return slips. Here's hoping for better weather this year! The help rota is also
up on the board and, as always, we rely heavily on volunteers to make the event happen safely. If you are able to help please let us

know. We are always short of people to help with the bar, the gates and marshalling. Thank you to those of you that have offered
firewood, we look forward to seeing you all there.
Attendance and Punctuality
Year 5 have achieved 100% attendance this week – congratulations to them. As our whole school our
attendance currently stands at 98%, and while this is something to be proud of we continue to monitor
children’s attendance very closely. Tonight your child will bring home their half-termly attendance slip.
This will indicate their level of attendance using our banding system and where appropriate offer support. A
copy of the original letter sent out is on our website should you wish to familiarise yourselves with the
details.
November see the start of Give It 100% Attendance competition in conjunction with the local authority. Anyone achieving 100% next
month will be entered into a draw with a possibility of winning family cinema tickets.
Year 2 Football
On Tuesday 20th October, Year 2 took part in an inter LS16 school football tournament at Ralph Thoresby High School. We entered
three teams, all of whom had a great time. Two of our teams came joint second overall. Many adults also complimented the children
on how well behaved they were. Well done to everyone that took part!
