Congratulations to the five young men who are ordained this Saturday to the Holy Priesthood—Benjamin Barr, Thomas Gramc, David Green, Alexander Schrenk, and Daniel Waruszewski. A year ago at this time, we were celebrating our own parishioner’s ordination—Father Anthony Sciarappa! Hard to believe that it was already a year ago. Get ready for XLT! Coming Wednesday, July 19. See page 3 Information about Amachi Mentoring is on page 13. Change a life! Follow us on Facebook, Instagram, and Twitter! Let us give thanks to God for the gift of these young men and how generous they are in offering their lives in our service as priests. Let us also continue to pray and encourage more young men and women to consider a vocation of the priesthood or religious life. The downsizing of our diocese, which is indeed upon us, is a daily stark reminder of the need for more priests in our present age. From where do priests come? They come from strong, healthy Catholic families! They come from a counter-cultural attitude within the home and community. They come from a heart that is open to God first and the world second. The Diocese of Nashville, Tennessee—where I was recently for the funeral of Bishop David Choby—over the past ten years has ordained 28 priests. How does something like this happen? I asked the priests in the diocese during my visit what they were doing to foster so many vocations. They said it was “building a culture within the culture that supported the faith and the priesthood.” Nashville is in what is called “the Bible Belt.” Catholics are far from a majority. Only approximately 3% of the population of the state is Catholic. In our neck of the woods here in Pittsburgh, approximately 40% of the population is Catholic. It is very eye-opening to be in a community where only 3% of the population is Catholic and see 28 young priests being ordained over the past decade. “By giving yourself to God, you not only receive Himself in exchange, but eternal life as well.” —Saint Francis de Sales The Church On Mission, or the Church Alive, or whatever the effort to revitalize the faith in the Diocese of Pittsburgh is called—perhaps we could learn a great deal from our friends in the South. An Invitation to Join a Job Search Work Team Sharing Your Talents With the Job Search Ministry If you’re in between jobs or thinking about making a change, the Job Search Ministry at Saints John & Paul would like to extend an open invitation to join a Job Search Work Team (JSWT), a group of 6-12 job hunters who meet to focus on job search effectiveness techniques. The group is facilitated by a trained leader and meets on the first and third Mondays of each month from 6:30–8:30 PM in the Kitchen Conference Room downstairs in the church. There is no cost for this service or for reference materials provided. We know that our parish is filled with generous and talented people who are willing to share with others. The Saints John & Paul Job Search Ministry has been in existence for a year now, and we are currently serving 126 active members and are proud to report that an additional 25 former members landed jobs in 2016. Over the last year, our very small, all-volunteer Steering Committee met with about 50 people for individual coaching and resume review and also hosts a monthly professional development program that is open to everyone in our community, regardless of job status, attracting an average of 23 participants every month. A JSWT provides networking and personal support, as well as accountability, with a focus on positive and effectivenessoriented discussions. Members are responsible for their own searches, but collaboration helps everyone conduct a stronger search. As a matter of fact, studies show that JSWT members found jobs 20% faster. Interested in joining? Please contact Jerry Sabuda at sabuda@ att.net. Small Groups Pray, Connect, Grow, and Serve with your parish community! Thank you! SS John & Paul Music / Corpus Christi 5 I consider myself very blessed, but this is something I kept from an old church bulletin and just have to share it with you today! If you woke up this morning with more health than sickness, you are more blessed than the million who will not survive the week. If you have never experienced the danger of battle, the loneliness of imprisonment, the agony of torture, or the pangs of starvation, you are ahead of 500 million or more people in the world. If you attend worship without fear of harassment, arrest, torture, or death, you are more blessed than 3 billion people in the world. If you have food in the refrigerator, clothes on your back, a roof over your head and a place to sleep, you are richer than 75% of those living in this world. If you have money in the bank, in your wallet, and spare change in a dish or jar someplace, you are among the top 8% of the world’s wealthy. If your parents are still alive and are still married, you are very rare even in the United States. If you hold your head up with a smile on your face and are truly thankful, you are blessed because the majority can, but most do not. If you can hold someone’s hand, hug them, or even touch them on the shoulder, you are blessed because you can offer God’s healing touch. If you prayed yesterday and today, you are in the minority because you believe that God does hear and answer prayer. If you can read this article, you are truly blessed because over 2 billion people in the world cannot read. God Bless, —Adele Scherer corpus christi The purpose of the feast of the Sacred Heart is to honor with more fervor and devotion the suffering love of Jesus Christ as He instituted the Sacrament of His Body and Blood. from instagram.com/sjcantius To enter into the spirit of devotion to the Heart of Jesus, we must therefore honor the past sufferings of the Savior and make reparation for the ingratitude with which He is daily overwhelmed in the Eucharist. Great indeed were the afflictions of the Heart of Jesus! Every kind of trial fell upon Jesus. He was weighted down with humiliations; He was assailed with the most revolting calumnies and disgraced in every possible way; He was loaded down with opprobrium and crushed with every form of contempt. But, in spite of everything, “He offered because it was His own will, and He opened not His mouth.” His love was stronger than death, and torrents of desolation could not quench its flame. His sufferings are now over; but since Jesus bore them for our sake, our gratitude must have no end. Our love must honor them as if they were taking place before our eyes. The Heart which endured them with so much love is here in the Blessed Sacrament; it is not dead, but living and active; not insensible, but still more affectionate. —Reflection from St. Peter Julian Eymard on the Sacred Heart of Jesus in the Most Blessed Sacrament 6 Outreach/ PERSECUTED Faith in Action! June 25, 2017 —Jen Katzfey, Outreach Coordinator In Egypt, there is a growing security crisis after gunmen killed at least 28 people on a bus carrying Christian pilgrims not even a month ago. Many suffered bullet wounds to the head, with ten of the dead children, who were traveling with their parents to visit an ancient monastery. In our country, we take so many freedoms for granted. Freedom to say what we want, do what we want, and to believe what we want. In many countries, these freedoms are not guaranteed. We take for granted that we can attend church if we want to, if our busy schedules allow us to. In the past weeks, we have seen Christian churches throughout the world come under attack by people who are threatened by our faith. We have seen bombings, and sadly, deaths. While I was away at college, my family adopted a few young adults from Rwanda who were students at La Roche College. The college had a program called Pacem In Terris, which brought in students from war torn countries to study and learn. We invited them to join us at Christmas and other holidays, and I remember just how different the experience was for them. They would tell their stories, about their families and what they left behind. For many, their stories were devastating; entire families were wiped out in the genocide. It is estimated that over 800,000 Rwandans were killed during the 100-day period from April 7 to mid-July 1994. Our Rwandan friends were devout Catholics and often sang in the chapel’s choir. They also introduced me to the phrase, “God is good…ALL THE TIME!” Even with such terrible pasts and leaving so much struggle and horror behind, I found each of them to be uniquely positive, always smiling. Ask yourself, if entrances to all local Catholic churches were blocked, what would you do? If you felt threatened, would you continue to attend? What can you do to not only show your faith but ensure it continues for the next generation? Let’s not take for granted our ability to worship peacefully. Families can choose this option when their children are not comfortable in group settings or their schedule does not allow them to participate in the EDGE Program. The Middle School Home Study students will be watching Y-Disciple videos on Formed.org. Because we feel strongly that faith is learned through experiences, the home study students will complete four Catholic Experiences and four EDGE Social Events throughout the course of the year. The Catholic Experiences will be listed each month and the students can choose the four they would like to complete for the year. All Catholic Experiences are important and special and will not be assigned points or credits. The goal is to bring our young people to our campus to experience our Catholic faith. The four Catholic Experiences will encourage young people to live out the faith they are learning in their home study. The four EDGE Social Events are opportunities for our young people to connect with kids their age that go to their church. They will be offered once a month, including the summer months. Students will sign-up ahead of time for their four social events. Our first EDGE Social Event will be a Baseball Night at SSJP on Thursday, July 13 from 6:00–10:00PM. Wednesday, July 19 8:00 PM Upper CDC All high school and college students are invited after the XLT to a party of games, snacks, and more. Why? Come to XLT and you’ll know why you have the urge to party afterwards. Guest-written by Adam Boyle, Assistant to the Director of Youth + Young Adult Ministry I don’t know about you, but today’s readings make me feel unstoppable. Just the way I imagine Jesus saying these words to his twelve Apostles, I imagine Him getting so fired up about what He was saying, and that makes me believe it so much more. The first line just jumps right out at you: “Fear no one.” Fear is something that I really struggle with. Fear of not being accepted. Fear of not being enough. But Jesus almost immediately destroys those fears. “Are not two sparrows sold for a small coin? Yet not one of them falls to the ground without your Father’s knowledge. Even all the hairs of your head are counted. So do not be afraid; you are worth more than many sparrows.” Going to college presents a plethora of unique challenges and struggles for me, such as making friends, getting into a routine (that includes going to class), and eating well. I couldn’t be more excited to be attending Franciscan University of Steubenville this fall. I can honestly say that I was made to go to Franciscan. When I realized this, all the fears I face right passed away immediately. That’s the power of the Holy Spirit working in my life. I’m working on getting better at recognizing it, and I can tell you that it changes everything. “Let go, let God” might be a cliché phrase, but it has the power to change your life. Let go, let God. —Adam 10 Mass Intentions / Readings Masses & Prayers Monday, June 26 (Gn 12:1-9/Mt 7:1-5) 9:00 AM † Albert Comini (Jeff & Debbie King) Miraculous Medal following Mass Tuesday, June 27 (Gn 13:2, 5-18/Mt 7:6, 12-14) 7:00 AM † Theresa Kosor (Shirley Bell & Sharon Coons) Wednesday, June 28 (Gn 15:1-12, 17-18/Mt 7:15-20) 9:00 AM † Joe & Lil Sciulli (Sharon & Lou Piciacchio) Rosary Prayed Following Mass Thursday, June 29 (Acts 12:1-11/ 2 Tm 4:6-8, 17-18/Mt 16:13-19) 7:00 AM † Caleb Schawb (George Rozman) Friday, June 30 (Gn 17:1, 9-10, 15-22/Mt 8:1-4) 9:00 AM † Richard Arrigo (Colleen Murray) Saturday, July 1 (Gn 8:1-15/Mt 8:5-17) 4:00 PM Confessions 5:00 PM † Richard Parran (Kevin & Christine McDonald) Sunday, July 2 (2 Kgs 4:8-11, 14-16a/Rom 6:3-4, 8-11/Mt 10:37-42) 7:30 AM ‡ Parishioners of Saints John & Paul 9:00 AM † Lizz Lovett (Cenk Family) 11:00 AM † John & Mark Brader (Brader, Buck, Munoz & Ruffing Families) † Memorial Mass ‡ Mass for Spiritual & Physical Wellness Our Faithful Departed Joann Ibinson Sister of Marge Fichter-Miller and Aunt of Elizabeth Miller Bertha Jane Lamanna Mother of Jim Lamanna and Mary Lou Karlovitss Frank Haus Husband of Judith Haus Anibal de la Colina Brother of Àngeles & Ricardo Iriart Joseph Fryz Husband of Linda Fryz Wedding Banns I Dennis Morelli & Lauren Lancia III Mathew Olson & Mia DiRienzo III Matthew Vaupel & Emily Dean June 25, 2017 Please pray for the brave men and women who are serving our country: 1LT Brian Austin, US Army; 2LT John Robert Baldwin, US Army; 2LT Justin Burdette, US Marine; Major C.
