10
Commandments
The Ten Commandments . . .
Today:
“Love and Things”
“You shall not steal”
Deuteronomy 5:19
1. What the command demands
l. The sin of stealing
• It is based on the principle of
ownership
• It is based on the law of love
"Out of the heart come evil thoughts,
murder, adultery, theft…” (Matthew 15:19)
“seek first His kingdom and His righteousness,
and all these things will be given to you as
well. Therefore do not worry about tomorrow”
Matt 6:33
“not to steal … but to show that (you) can be
fully trusted, so that in every way (you) will
make the teaching about God our Savior
attractive”
Titus 2:10
“Let the thief no longer steal, but rather let him work, doing
good with his own hands, so that he may be able to give to
those in need” (Ephesians 4:28)
l. God has ordained work
ll. Our work should be good
“make it your ambition to lead a quiet life: to mind your own
business and work with your hands, just as we told you, so
that your daily life may win the respect of outsiders and so
that you will not be dependent on anybody.” (1 Thess 4:11-12)
3. How the command applies
It is a call to care
“Anyone who has been stealing
must steal no longer, but must work,
doing something useful with their own
hands, that they may have something
to share with those in need” (Eph 4:28)
It is a call to contentment
“I have learned to be content whatever
the circumstances. I have learned
the secret of being content in any and every
situation … I can do everything through Him
who gives me strength” (Phil 4:11-13)
It is a call to trust
“Keep your lives free from the love of money
and be content with what you have, because
God has said, “Never will I leave you; never
will I forsake you.” So we say with confidence,
“The Lord is my helper; I will not be afraid”
(Hebrews 13:5-6)
“Seek first His kingdom and His
righteousness, and all these
things will be given to you as
well. Therefore do not worry
about tomorrow” (Matt 6:33)
