Good music is a tradition at Northwestern State University.
With a large variety of band opportunities for musicians, that
tradition thrives year after year.
The Northwestern State University bands bring together students of all ages,
academic majors and interests to entertain with exciting and beautiful music.
Approximately 60 percent of the band members are non-music majors whose
participation in spectacular halftime shows and “on stage” concerts is a highlight
of their college experiences. Music majors find the experience valuable to their
performance or teaching careers.
The Northwestern State University “Spirit of Northwestern” Demon Marching
Band is truly the pride of NSU. With over 300 members, NSU boasts one
of the largest and most diverse marching bands in the South. Playing both
traditional and contemporary styles of music to match their unique and inspiring
formations, the Demon Band succeeds in delighting audiences performance after
performance.
Auxiliary units including the Color Guard, Demon Dazzler Danceline, and NSU
Twirlers, add flavor and animation to each performance. All three units are
comprised of talented and dedicated students who enhance the excitement of
every performance.
The concert bands, including the Wind Symphony, Wind Ensemble, Symphonic
Band, Jazz Ensemble and Pep Band allow students to participate in a variety
of ensembles throughout the year. Concerts are presented on campus each
semester. The Wind Symphony and Wind Ensemble also participate in the NSU
Conductors’ Conference and commencement ceremonies and the Wind Symphony
also presents concerts at high schools in the region displaying the versatility of
the university bands.
Performance scholarships are available to band members and the amount of
the award is based on a prepared audition as well as high school achievements,
such as participation in honor bands, solo/ensemble competitions, awards and
scholastic scores. Out-of-state fee waivers are available for students qualifying
for a performance scholarship and who have a 2.5 minimum high school GPA.
Auditions for scholarships may be arranged by visiting the Demon Band Web
site (http://demonband.edu/) and completing the audition request form, by calling
318-357-4522; or by e-mailing [email protected]. Prospective students will then
be contacted to arrange a day and time for the audition and to schedule a campus
tour that will be provided by the University Recruiting Office.

The University Recruiting Office would like the opportunity to show you around
the beautiful Northwestern campus. Personalized campus tours are available at
your convenience. This is a great way to learn about the university firsthand by
seeing the campus and meeting some of our outstanding students, faculty and
staff.
A Fall and Spring Senior Day is also offered on a Saturday once each semester.
This is a fun way to get to know NSU and meet some new students. Junior Day is
offered each winter for juniors who want an early start on learning about college.
In addition, a summer orientation program, Freshman Connection, is offered four
times each summer. This program gives new students an opportunity to acclimate
to the campus and register for classes.
