Curriculum Information for Parents & Carers
Year 5
There is a requirement for all schools to publish the outline curriculum for each year group
on their website. It is impossible to publish details of every aspect of the curriculum. This
document outlines the key content. Staff will always be very happy to discuss the
content of the curriculum in more detail with any parent or carer. It should be noted that
the details below are the ‘standard curriculum’ requirements; we constantly differentiate
these to support and extend all pupils.

Summarise main points of an argument or discussion within their
reading & make up own mind about issue/s.
Can compare between two texts.
Appreciate that people use bias in persuasive writing.
Appreciate how two people may have a different view on the

Recognise clauses within sentences

Count forwards & backward with positive & negative numbers
through zero.
Count forwards/backwards in steps of powers of 10 for any given
number up to 1000000.
Compare & order numbers with 3 decimal places.
Read Roman numerals to 1000.
Identify all multiples & factors, including finding all factor pairs.
Use known tables to derive other number facts.
Recall prime numbers up to 19.
Recognise place value of any number up to 1000000.
Round any number up to 1000000 to the nearest 10, 100, 1000,
10000 or 100000.
Round decimals with two decimal places to nearest whole
number & 1dp.
Add & subtract:
o Numbers with more than 4-digits using efficient written
method (column).
o Numbers with up to 2dp.
Multiply:
o 4-digits by 1-digit/ 2-digit
Divide:
o 4-digits by 1-digit
Multiply & divide:
o Whole numbers & decimals by 10, 100 & 1000
Count up/down in thousandths.
Recognise mixed numbers & improper fractions & convert from
one to another.
Multiply proper fractions & mixed numbers by whole numbers.
Solve time problems using timetables and converting between
different units of time.





Living things and their habitats: which animals depend on
each other for survival, lifecycles of frogs and butterflies,
different animals are born in different ways, how humans
change, plant lifecycles.
Animals including humans: what can we do at different
stages of life, how do we keep fit and healthy, life
expectancy of different animals.
Properties and changes of materials: changing and reversing
materials, dissolving and evaporating, reversible and
irreversible, bicarbonate of soda and its impact on materials,
Earth and Space: describe the movement of the Earth, and
other planets, relative to the Sun in the solar system, describe
the movement of the Moon relative to the Earth, describe the
Sun, Earth and Moon as approximately spherical bodies, use
the idea of the Earth’s rotation to explain day and night and
the apparent movement of the sun across the sky.
Forces: explain that unsupported objects fall towards the
Earth because of the force of gravity acting between the
Earth and the falling object, identify the effects of air
resistance, water resistance and friction, that act between
moving surfaces, recognise that some mechanisms, including
levers, pulleys and gears, allow a smaller force to have a
greater effect.


