Armenian Behavioral Science Association: An overview ** The Armenian Behavioral Science Association (ABSA) was formed on August 31, 1987 in New York City, during the joint meetings of the International Council of Psychologists and the American Psychological Association. Its six founders represented six disciplines within the behavioral sciences: Anny P. Bakalian, PhD, Columbia (Sociology/Anthropology) Haikaz M. Grigorian, MD, MPH, Bergen Pines Med Center (Social Psychiatry) Hagop S. Pambookian, PhD, Shawnee State (Psychology) Mardo Soghomian, PhD, Columbia (Political Science) Harold Takooshian, PhD, Fordham (Social Sciences) Richard H. Tashjian, PhD, New York University (Social Statistics) Following the devastating earthquake in the Caucasus region at 11:41 am on December 7, 1988, ABSA linked with other U.S. and global groups to promote relief efforts to help experts to reach the survivors. From its start, the mission of ABSA has been to promote the behavioral sciences within the Armenian community in the USA and abroad, though a diverse series of programs--Symposia, conferences, bulletins, directories (of USA and overseas personnel), and networking. One key part of this is the ABSA Awards for Outstanding Achievement, to recognize excellence among behavioral scientists of Armenian ancestry. Since 1987, ABSA Awards have been personally presented at ABSA gatherings across North America, to a diverse group of distinguished behavioral scientists in many fields, who have made impressive research or other contributions to their field. For any details, check the ABSA webpage or contact the Executive Officer below.
