Adding Fractions
1) Find a common denominator (use LCM)
2) Write equivalent fractions using the common denominator
(What you do to the bottom, you do to the top)
3) Add numerators, the denominator stays the same
4) Write the sum in simplest form
Subtracting Fractions
1) Find a common denominator (use LCM)
2) Write equivalent fractions using the common denominator
(What you do to the bottom, you do to the top)
3) Regroup if necessary
4) Subtract numerators, the denominator stays the same
5) Write the difference in simplest form
Multiplying Fractions
1) Put a 1 under any whole number
2) Change any mixed numbers to improper fractions
3) Simplify (cross cancel) if possible
4) Multiply numerators
5) Multiply denominators
6) Write the product in simplest form
Dividing Fractions
1) Put a 1 under any whole number
2) Change any mixed numbers to improper fractions
3) Rewrite the problem as multiplication problem using the
reciprocal of the divisor (keep, switch, flip)
4) Simplify (cross cancel) if possible
5) Multiply numerators
6) Multiply denominators
7) Write the quotient in simplest form
