GridPP37 – (R)evolution Prof. David Britton GridP37 Collaboration Meeting Ambleside 30th Aug 2016 David Britton, University of Glasgow IET, Oct 09 GridPP Project leader University of Glasgow Slide 1 Since Last Time Target for 2016: Increase Run-2 data from 4 25 fb-1 David Britton, University of Glasgow Target for 2016: Achieve design luminosity of 1034 GridPP37 Slide 2 Annual Comparison David Britton, University of Glasgow GridPP37 Slide 3 Stable Beams David Britton, University of Glasgow GridPP37 Slide 4 Schedule for Rest of 2016 David Britton, University of Glasgow GridPP37 Slide 5 Consequences-1 David Britton, University of Glasgow GridPP37 Slide 6 Consequences-2 (Aug 1st) David Britton, University of Glasgow GridPP37 Slide 7 2016 CPU 10% at Tier-1 14% at Tier-2s David Britton, University of Glasgow GridPP37 Slide 8 Beyond LHC Experiments • Non-LHC activities supported are shown in this log plot LHC Non-LHC See PC’s talk on Friday morning • Supported through: • 10% of GridPP resources reserved for non-LHC activities • Local leverage at Tier2 sites Slide Non-LHC computing support • Every effort is made to support any new PP (PPAN) activity within existing resources • But as more and more activities arise then eventually unitarity will be violated • Policy published on GridPP web site: new activities are encouraged to: - liaise with GridPP when preparing any requests for funding at least make their computing resource costs manifest when seeking approval where these are “large” then to request these costs where possible this is particularly important if a large commitment (pledge in LHC terms) is required to an international collaboration. • Of course, if it is not “timely” to obtain costs, then best efforts access remains. • Not just the computing resources: Each new activity needs to consider • • • • Operations Generic Services User Support Activity-specific services Slide New Mind Set • Beyond GridPP5 the UK environment is likely to look rather different: – “GridPP6” may not exist as an isolated concept. – We may become part of a much more integrated UK e-ecosystem. • Need to carefully position ourselves so any new environment works well for us: – Current emphasis in GridPP5 on engaging with new user-groups. – It helps us if other people want what we want. – It helps us to be recognised as team-players and domain-experts. • “Helping others” puts more demands on our time and resources, but we believe this is an important thread within GridPP5. David Britton, University of Glasgow GridPP37 Slide 11 Strategy We need to deliver the increase in resources required during Run-2, with the reduced effort available in GridPP5. • At the Tier-1 the strategy is to broaden the user-base to share the cost of developments that ultimately allow a reduction in manpower. • At the Tier-2s, we have an ambitious plan to consolidate our sites into larger, data-centric, sites with 2+ FTE and smaller, computecentric, sites run with only 0.5 FTE. Effectively, we need to evolve our infrastructure both to deliver the Run-2 computing and to prepare for the future.
