MIAMI SUNS BASKETBALL ORGANIZATION
Coach – Athlete Team Commitment
Player Contract
Date: ________________
Between:__________________________ and the Miami Suns Basketball Organization
Purpose
Participation in athletics is a privilege, not a right. Dedication, desire, discipline, respect, and good citizenship
are essential personal characteristics, which are necessary for an athlete to successfully participate on any
team. The goal of the Miami Suns Youth Development (MSYD) is to nurture these traits. In doing so, each
athlete should develop a sense of pride in herself, the team, and community. The coaches and Board
members of the MSYD believe that the tradition of winning is based on these stated principles. In order to help
the athlete to achieve these goals, the following “Athletic Policies” must be understood and agreed to between
the team, student athlete, and the parents.
Academics
We expect the athletes to maximize their efforts in achieving their full academic potential. Good grades are
necessary component for successful participation on any athletic team. Therefore, certain standards must be
met.
1. School district policy
2. Those who fail a subject may be required to participate in after school programs and may be temporarily
prohibited from participating in basketball activities to allow for greater focus on academics
3. If an athlete who receives an interim report showing a failing grade it would be in his/her best interest to
report for extra help provided by the after school program to circumvent a failing grade
4. If an athlete fails according to district policy, the athlete must show documentation that grades have
improved before being re-instated into basketball activities
Drinking, Drugs, and Tobacco Products
Drinking alcoholic beverages and/or using abusive drugs are harmful to your health. Tobacco products are also
harmful to your health. Hence, all athletes must refrain from their use. Verification of drinking of alcoholic
beverages and the use of illegal drugs by the athlete will result in immediate dismissal from the program.
Attendance, Suspension, and Injuries
Each athlete is expected to accept responsibility for his/her appearance and behavior at all time. Therefore,
certain standards must be met.
1. If any athlete is absent from school he/she may not participate in any practice, scrimmage, or game on the
day they were absent.
2. If any athlete is not feeling well, suffers an injury, or unable to participate fully in practice, they may be asked
to leave practice or scrimmage so they may be tended to properly.
3. Suspensions from School - We expect our athletes to be role models for the community. Hence, if an athlete
is suspended he/she cannot participate and/or attend game or practice for the duration of the suspension. Any
athlete who accumulates a total of four days for all suspensions received may be dismissed from the program
and remain ineligible for the remainder of the academic year.
4. If injured, an athlete in the spirit of the team, should attend the local games and lend support to the team
unless physically unable to do so.
All team members must attend all scheduled practices, games, and meetings. If circumstances arise whereby
the athlete cannot attend a practice, game or meeting, the coach must be notified by personal contact or phone
call from the player. The onus is on the player!

result in athletes being prohibited from possessing the cell phone in the gym. Behavior/Language As
representatives of our program, we expect our athletes to be on their best behavior and to act as ladies/
gentlemen. Hence, unsportsmanlike conduct and other negative behavior will not be tolerated and may result
in being placed on suspension or dismissal from the program. Uniforms and Equipment Each athlete will be
issued a uniform and equipment appropriate to their team. Each athlete is responsible for his/her uniform and

who just stops showing up to practices and games and then quits will be considered in breach of contract.
MIAMI SUNS BASKETBALL ORGANIZATION PARENT/PLAYER/COACH RELATIONSHIP
Travel basketball can teach many positive traits, such as the spirit of cooperation, self-discipline, and regard for
physical fitness. We ask that parents refrain from criticizing opposing players, other parents, other teams,
teammates, or officials. We also ask that parents refrain from involving themselves in the coaching of the
players at either practices or games, unless asked. Please leave the coaching to the coaches! We also ask
that parents refrain from talking to officials before, during or after our games.
Team discipline is extremely important. Breaking team rules will have consequences, which will be situationally
appropriate and determined by the coaching staff. We are not anticipating any disciplinary problems however,
consequences might include limited playing time, extra conditioning for the individual and/or dismissal from the
program. In our spectator enthusiasm, we are often prone to issue instructions to the players that are contrary
to those of the coach; this only causes confusion for the players.
PLEASE ENCOURAGE YOUR SON/DAUGHTER TO FOLLOW HIS/HER COACH’S INSTRUCTIONS AND
LEAVE THE COACHING TO THE COACH.
Parents need to align themselves with the coach in teaching their children how to cope with the natural
frustrations of being a member of a team. Sports provide an excellent opportunity to teach children about the
realities of competitive situations. They must be taught how to be a cooperative team member, how to make
use of both positive and negative feedback, how to cope with adversity, how to achieve mental toughness, and
how to be a gracious winner or loser. Players are not guaranteed playing time! Some athletes will play more
than others. These decisions are entirely at the coach’s discretion, the coaches are under no obligation to
explain their decisions, and will not discuss playing time at anytime. However, coaches are available to discuss
how a player can work to improve their skills which will ultimately lead to more playing time.
When a player has a concern with the coach, parents have the responsibility of teaching their children the
steps necessary to remedy the situation. The following steps should be taken if a player has a concern with the
coach:
STEP ONE: The player should discuss the problem/concern with the coaches and try to arrive at a solution to
the problem AT PRACTICE. If not resolved then...
STEP TWO: The player should call the coach and set up time or an appointment before or after practice to
discuss the problem/concern with the coach(es) and try to arrive at a solution to the problem on their own. If
not resolved then...
STEP THREE: The parent should call the coach and set up a time for the player, parent and coaches to meet
and arrive at a solution.
UNDER NO CIRCUMSTANCES is a parent to approach a coach with a complaint or an evaluation of
coaching philosophy BEFORE, DURING OR AFTER A GAME.
The above procedure must be followed in dealing with any situations that may arise. The coaches will conduct
themselves professionally and expect the same courtesy and will NOT ALLOW THE COACHES OR
PLAYERS TO BE BERATED by parents or fellow teammates. If you or your children refuse to follow the
guidelines set forth, you will be asked to leave the program.
We hope that support for the program will continue to grow each year. We hope that parents will support their
child(ren) by attending their tournaments and giving positive encouragement. We encourage you to refrain
from criticizing your child, their teammates, their coaches, or the officials. If a parent cannot abide by the
aforementioned expectations during a game or practice, their child may be removed from the game/practice
until the parent conforms to the program standards for conduct. A player or spectator may be asked to leave
the premises if they become disrespectful to other players, coaches, or officials. Please be careful and
respectful. Remember that our behavior is a reflection of our families, teams, programs, and community.
