We’re really excited with FirstBase which is the next major concept in how we help homeless people. This FirstBase ‘step-up’ accommodation program has been successful overseas – the US Department of Housing and Urban Development reports that 83% of formerly homeless or about-to-be-homeless people who were put into this kind of re-housing, were still stably housed two years after their subsidies ended. The goal of Jewish House FirstBase is to catch people at the early stages of their homelessness, thereby giving them the potential to get back on their feet and become part of the community again. Welcome to Jewish House FirstBase The critical next step for homeless people. How the program works for our tenants. FirstBase helps homeless people to get back on their feet post-crisis, and to regain their long-term independence and self esteem. This kind of support helps to ensure that people who have been homeless do not become homeless again … it’s a unique opportunity for them to rebuild their lives. FirstBase provides subsidised housing for singles, couples and even families for periods between three to twelve months. During this time Jewish House provides intensive case management, psychological counseling as well as assistance with finding employment and ultimately long-term accommodation. Please choose your gift, which can be dedicated and displayed prominently: The average person’s lifespan is 82 years, but for the homeless it is 47 years. These people desperately need our help if they are to turn their lives around, and FirstBase is where homeless people can start again … to make a home. However VITAL FUNDS are needed in order to establish and maintain this unique program. This represents 8.9% of the overall homeless problem in NSW. Homelessness is a spiralling crisis in our community, with more than 28,000 homeless people in NSW. This is a 27% increase since 2006 – and will continue to rise if we don’t find innovative ways to counter it, such as FirstBase and Project 2500.
