Just like any other edition - can you find the following: 1. Kaine's riddle 5. Aliya making mash 2. Gemma keeping an eye on hard working Whitney 6. Staff squad picture - can you name us all? 3. Lewis' question in the 'Get to know the IES team' 7. Destiny's list of adjectives 4. Frankie tying his laces 8. Kaine working at the computer IES Gazette April Welcome to the April edition of the IES gazette. We are hoping that by the time this lands on your doorstep, the weather has turned a lot warmer than it has been this month to date - the children have been delighted to see snow in April, but I am not so sure staff are feeling the same! This issue of the gazette we have called the 'Classroom Edit'. We wanted to show the wonderful learning that takes place all day, every day, with our pupils at IES across both sites, and Cross Street. As you may be aware already, we are a fully accredited ASDAN centre, and AQA centre meaning we are registered with the JCQ (Joint Council for Qualifications). Given the bespoke nature of our programmes, this gives us the flexibility to offer a range of qualifications to suit the individual - from AQA Unit Award, GCSE, and beyond to A/S and A Level as appropriate. That said, we are now officially entering exam season - so a huge 'good luck' to our current Year 11's, who so far, have shown excellent discipline and commitment in their preparation and revision to ensure they can be the 'best they can be'. They have all of our full support and encouragement 'gambate'! Another huge, and much celebrated, achievement at IES this month has been the PGL trip to Caythorpe. Four pupils went for four days and undertook a range of team-building activities and exercises. You can take a look for yourself some of the resilience-building tasks that were tried out, and the skills learned. An extremely worthwhile expedition. Not easy often going away from home for the first time on an extended trip. Well done all involved. Three other bits of great news this April: 1. We welcomed Lewis to our school this month from Warwickshire - a warm welcome! 2. IES achieved 'Investor In People' status as an employer - with the highest result of 'Excellent' given as an accolade; 3. SENDIES - our school charity that undertakes educational research to ensure we are driving forward and contributing towards SEN research, appointed Nadine Scarff, an experienced manager in this field. Nadine has already met with a Warwickshire councillor who is supporting our work. Our first charity event we are planning with the children will be hosting a party at IES to celebrate the Queen's 90th birthday. What a summer it is lining up to be! Until May (when we have many of our own birthdays), much light and love. As with all students at IES, Michael is completing his bespoke learning programme. Here he is researching using the computer at the library and making notes. IES Gazette April Left and right, is Destiny during an English lesson. Destiny came up with some adjectives. great This was to help create a scary creative writing story. In English this term, our GCSE English pupil's have been reading the book 'Lord of the Flies' and have been working very hard. I would like to congratulate Kaine on his excellent plot summary that he produced - which now has pride of place in the English room. Well done Kaine this a piece of work to be proud of. I would also like to say a big well done to Lewis for his continuous effort and hard work in English this term. Lewis is studying ‘Lord of the Flies’ doing lots of characters analysis. - Gemma IES Gazette April As mentioned in the Headteacher's Editorial, focus has been made towards the classroom based activities at school. Take a look at some of this month's learning... This is Lorna posing for the camera during her maths class where she seems to be enjoying the challenge. A lot of students mix classroom learning with outdoor experiences, for example Equine Therapy. Below is another selection of Aliya's cooking skills. In her lessons with Jason, Aliya kept track of how much different dishes cost - helping to make delicious dishes for pint-size prices. Luckily for our students Aliya's dishes were actually scheduled as the school lunch - have a look out for which day on the school notice board (of course there are always vegetarian options, too). Right (near) is Aliya's Cottage Pie. Two dishes for 35p a portion. It is possible to eat well on a budget. Aliya's Bolognese sauce IES Gazette April Here's Lucy looking ecstatic to be getting stuck in to some maths work. Lucy works very hard completing AQA Unit Award Schemes. She is heading to her exam season with confidence. If you think it's just students who are taught at school - you're wrong. All staff have been hard at work learning from experienced guest speakers – here the staff gained further Autism training. IES Gazette April Some lucky IES students attended a trip to the Library of Birmingham. "The Library of Birmingham is a major new cultural destination, rewriting the book for 21st century public libraries" - Official Website All students enjoyed this trip and hopefully it may inspire further trips in the future. The objective for this trip was to become more familiar with libraries and their layout. IES Gazette April Despite focusing on Classroom activities, here is a snippet of the other activities students have enjoyed. Here is Lorna tending to the horses every need, most importantly with a smile on her face as well. This was part of her Equine Therapy studies. Lorna really get a lot out and riding Blue. Left: Destiny and Aliya during play therapy, having lots of fun. And practicing friendship skills. Right: Lucy at Ash End Farm. Lucy's favourite were the goats! She learned about their habitats. IES Gazette IES Trip to Mosque The students visited the mosque where they learned all about Muslim practices. Here we can see the tour guide demonstrating how Muslim’s wash before they pray. Natalie at the Arabic School in the mosque. The children sit on the floor at these small tables during their lessons. The carpet was comfy, but I for one would prefer a table.
