Commodore’s Log
Hi YBYC Members, We are almost half way through 2017, that old saying “The older you get
the faster it goes”, is certainly true. Recently we have lost two former yacht club members,
Max Blust and Cathy Lannen, and personally I have lost my good friend and colleague that I
taught second grade with for twenty years. So treasure your time and do not put off things
you want to do. The yacht club has always been important to me and I have enjoyed the
many opportunities I have had to participate . We have a wide variety of backgrounds and
skills but all love boating and the water. The Seafood and Wine Festival was successful again
this year, the high school racing team attended several regattas and did very well, our Spring
Regatta was fun plus made money this year and we have had five entertaining general meetings. Thank you to all the volunteers that helped these activities take place, they wouldn’t
have happened without you. So “Ask not what YBYC can do for you, ask what you can do for
YBYC” , I borrowed that one, just in case you didn’t know. Wishing you Fair Winds, Dorothy

Our July potluck will be hosted by Joe and Robin Speer. They plan to bring their Hobie Adventure Islands and demonstrate how easy they are to put together and use. More information

Race Corner
By Matt Hawkyard
A couple updates from the racing side of things. First of all, it’s looking like the Bridge to
Bridge race is definitely for sure gonna happen in 2017, maybe:). Our friends at AYC are
trying to get something going at least. Stand by to stand by. Part of it hinges on getting
enough boats involved, so if you're interested let me know. IF B2B happens, then I’ll be
trying to drum up support and volunteers on somewhat short notice. Second, the spring series
is underway and the year is off to a good start. We’ve had around ten boats on the water each
week and a good number of folks eating burgers at the club afterwords, great fun. Which
brings me to my next point. There are a number of folks looking to crew. If you are thinking
about racing your boat, or are just a little shy on crew, let us know! Finally, Run Rabbit Run
was dismasted in one of our recent Wednesday night races, so please say a farewell to a great
boat and give Jeff Breazile a pat on the back and wish him well finding a suitable
replacement.
High School Report
1. The high school sailing season officially ended with a BBQ awards ceremony on Tuesday,
May 30. By all counts the season was a huge success, and we had a really exceptional group of
sailors this year. Our sailors had the opportunity to sail in 8 regattas this season (4 in Portland, 2 in Hood River, 1 on Orcas Island, 1 here) and they took full advantage of these opportunities, with two sailors attending all 8 regattas. We had several new sailors on the team this
year and it was amazing to watch their rapid progress at skippering and crewing. If they all
return next year (and each bring a friend), we'll have an amazing season next year! A huge
thanks to Head Coach Greg for taking the lead, and Terry, Laurie, Ron, and Herman for helping make it all happen.
2. We submitted a proposal to the Oregon Youth Sailing Foundation (OYSF) in early May to
fund buying several 420s from Hood River, who will be upgrading their fleet. OYSF ran short
of time at their last board meeting, but said they will consider our proposal at their next meeting on June 6. The limited feedback we received from OYSF was quite positive, so hopefully it
gets funded.
