Edlesborough School Admissions Procedures Edlesborough School Admissions Edlesborough School Admissions is determined by the Bucks County Council Admissions Policy in accordance with the schedule laid out by the Cabinet Member for Achievement, Learning and Skills. Parents wishing to admit their child into Edlesborough School must do so in accordance with the Buckinghamshire coordinated primary admissions scheme (see appendix 1). Allocation of places is determined by Buckinghamshire County Council. Edlesborough School admits up to 30 pupils in KS1, and up to 44 pupils in KS2. The local catchment area comprises the villages of Edlesborough, Dagnall, Ivinghoe Aston and Northall. Dagnall School is the linked infant school and, where parents wish, pupils have the option of transferring to Edlesborough in KS2, in accordance with admission criteria. Edlesborough also welcomes children from a variety of other villages and neighbouring locations as numbers allow. Visits We extend a warm welcome to parents and children to visit Edlesborough School and strongly recommend that parents and carers visit the school in conjunction with making a formal application for a place at the school. Parents and carers are asked to ring to make an appointment to see the Head Teacher in order to discuss their child’s admission to the school and to look round (with or without their child), prior to the child being admitted. We hold an annual Open Morning in the Autumn term when prospective parents are taken around the school by Year 6 pupils, and also have the opportunity to talk to the Head teacher and governors. Transition Where children are transferring from another school, Edlesborough works in partnership with parents and carers to help each child to settle quickly and happily. Parents are encouraged to arrange for their child to spend a day/half day at Edlesborough prior to them starting in their new class to enable them to become familiar with school routines and to establish friendships. Children starting in Reception class are invited for a half day induction visit, and parents and carers are offered a home visit to enable staff to meet each child in their own surroundings. These visits have proved very supportive and are highly recommended. The Head Teacher visits the link school Dagnall to speak to parents and carers in the summer term about transition arrangements. The head of Year 3/4 visits pupils at Dagnall school in the summer term to begin to establish relationships with the children and to share information with the class teacher. Appendix 1. THE BUCKINGHAMSHIRE ADMISSIONS POLICY FOR COMMUNITY PRIMARY SCHOOLS FOR SEPTEMBER 2011 1. All applications must be made in accordance with the Buckinghamshire coordinated primary admissions scheme (the primary scheme). 2. All governing bodies are required by section 324 of the Education Act 1996 to admit to the school a child with a statement of special educational needs that names the school. These children will therefore be admitted prior to applying the admission rules. 3. Once a child is allocated a reception place under the primary scheme the school will offer a full time place in September 2011. Parents can choose whether to defer this offer within the constraint at (4) below, or to accept the offer on a part time basis as they wish. 4. Parents of children younger than five have the right to defer entry until no later than the term after the child’s fifth birthday. This must be within the same academic year. 5. If there are more applications received than the places available at a school then the places will be allocated within the primary scheme in accordance with the published admission rules for the school. 6. Details of the dates for timely applications and how late applications are handled are given in the primary scheme. 7. Where a child is admitted to a school’s Foundation 1, (nursery or pre-school provision) there can be no guarantee of a place in the main school as the coordinated admissions scheme is used to decide who should be admitted to the main school. Admission rules for Buckinghamshire community primary schools 1. Children in care 2. Children living within the catchment area of the school. 3. For the main point of entry: Siblings of children who are attending the school or a ‘linked primary’ school in Year R – Year 5 at the time allocations are made or who have already been offered a place to start in the current academic year at the school (or a ‘linked primary school’). For immediate casual admission after the normal point of entry: Siblings of children who are in Year R to Year 6 at the time of admission to the school. 4. Children who have exceptional medical, or social needs, which can only be met at that school, supported by written evidence from an appropriate professional person. 5. ‘Children attending a primary school linked to the school named in the list of ‘linked primary’ schools at the time allocations are made. (A list of linked primary schools is attached) 6. Once the above rules have been applied, then any further places will be offered in distance order, using the distance between the family’s normal home address and the school’s nearest entrance gate, offering the closest first. We use the shortest appropriate route. (Details of how the distance is measured are set out below). 7. Where a school can take some, but not all, of the children who qualify under one of these rules, we will give priority to children taking account of the next rule (or rules) in the numbered list to decide who has priority for places. Explanation of terms used in the admission rules. Definition of Child in Care 1. This is a young person being looked after by the local authority. The term covers accommodated children and those who are in care under a Care Order/interim order. This can include: living with family or friends, in foster care, a children's home, residential school, special school or in supported lodgings. Definition of parent 2. This is as defined in law (the Education Act 1996) as either: • Any person who has parental responsibility (defined in Children Act 1989) for the child or young person; or • Any person who has care of the child or young person. Definition of sibling 3 A sibling is a brother or sister. For admission purposes we mean one of two or more individuals who have one or more parent in common, or any other child (including an adopted child) who permanently lives at the same address and for whom the parent also has parental responsibility. 4. We will only consider a pupil in a primary school as a ‘sibling’ if he or she is attending, in the specified year groups, the school or a linked primary school at the time of allocating (or, for casual admissions the time of admission), or has been formally offered a place at the school in the operation of the Coordinated Primary Admissions Scheme. Multiple births – twins, triplets etc 5. In cases where there is one remaining place and the next child on the waiting list is one of a twin, triplet or other multiple birth group the following will apply: 1) For admission to a class which is covered by the infant class size legislation Only one child may be admitted. A process of random allocation will be followed by the Local Authority. Parents have the option of seeking an alternative school able to admit both (or all) of the children. 2) For admission to classes other than at Key Stage 1 Both twins would be admitted (or all the siblings in the case of multiple births) even if this goes above the admission number of the school. Definition of home to school distance 6. The shortest appropriate route will be measured according to the Buckinghamshire County Council’s Geographical Information System. The distance measured for the shortest appropriate route will be determined by using a combination of two databases: i. The Ordnance Survey Integrated Transport Network (ITN) data, which is updated twice a year. This includes road types from Motorways to pedestrianised streets; and ii. In addition, a data file of footpaths, where the County Council is satisfied that the routes have a proper made up surface such as tarmac or concrete. This can be viewed on the council website In each case the data will be fixed during the Autumn term prior to the allocations. Definition of normal home address 7. This is the child’s home address. This must be where the parent or legal carer of the child live together unless it is proved that the child is resident elsewhere with someone who has legal care and control of the child. The address should be a residential property that is owned, leased or rented by the child’s parent(s) or person with legal care and control of the child. To avoid doubt where a child lives with parents with shared responsibility, each for part of a week or month, the address where the child lives will be determined having regard to a joint declaration from the parents stating the exact pattern of residence. If the residence is not split equally, then the relevant address used will be the address at which we are satisfied that the child spends the majority of the school week. Where there is an equal split or there is any doubt about residence, we will make the judgment about which address to use for the purposes of allocation. In making this judgment we will take into account the following: • any legal documentation confirming residence • the pattern of the residence • the period of time over which the current arrangement has been in place • confirmation from the previous school of the contact details and home address provided to them by the parents • which parent is in receipt of child benefit • where the child is registered with their GP • any other evidence the parents may supply to verify the position Primary School Catchment Areas 8.
