John 1 Core - Calvary Church

John 1:1-14
In the beginning was the Word, and the Word was with God,
and the Word was God. 2He was with God in the beginning.
3Through him all things were made; without him nothing was
made that has been made. 4In him was life, and that life was the
light of men. 5The light shines in the darkness, but the darkness
has not understood it.
6There came a man who was sent from God; his name was John.
7He came as a witness to testify concerning that light, so that
through him all men might believe. 8He himself was not the light;
he came only as a witness to the light. 9The true light that gives
light to every man was coming into the world.
John 1:1-14
10He
was in the world, and though the world was made through
him, the world did not recognize him. 11He came to that which was
his own, but his own did not receive him. 12Yet to all who received
him, to those who believed in his name, he gave the right to
become children of God — 13children born not of natural descent,
nor of human decision or a husband’s will, but born of God. t
14The Word became flesh and made his dwelling among us. We
have seen his glory, the glory of the One and Only, who came
from the Father, full of grace and truth.
John 1:1-14

Word = logos (logos)
The universe is in constant change and there is an underling
order or reason to this change - the “Logos." The Logos is
beyond human comprehension, even though it is the controlling
factor in all things. Men have no experience of the Logos that
they might understand it.

John is going to tell about the Word revealing himself in this book.

Word = logos (logos)
Plato's forms ~ the idea is the ultimate reality, the perfection.
The world that we see is merely a poor modeling of Reality,
which is by nature, beyond our ability to comprehend.
The Word is the founder of the forms, the Origin of reality.
In the Word, the ultimate, infinite perfection
is revealed as much as we can handle.
John 1:1-14

and the Word was God. 2He was with God in the beginning.
Genesis 1
In the beginning God created the heavens and the earth.
2Now the earth was formless and empty, darkness was
over the surface of the deep, and the Spirit of God was
hovering over the waters.
The Word is not someone/thing new,
but at the beginning was.

This all traces through Abraham.

Colossians 1:15-20
He is the image of the invisible God, the firstborn over all
creation. 16For by him all things were created: things in
heaven and on earth, visible and invisible, whether thrones
or powers or rulers or authorities; all things were created by
him and for him. 17He is before all things, and in him all
things hold together. 18And he is the head of the body, the
church; he is the beginning and the firstborn from among the
dead, so that in everything he might have the supremacy.
19For God was pleased to have all his fullness dwell in him,
20and through him to reconcile to himself all things, whether
things on earth or things in heaven, by making peace
through his blood, shed on the cross.

John 3:16-21
16“For
God so loved the world that he gave his one and
only Son, that whoever believes in him shall not perish but
have eternal life. 17For God did not send his Son into the
world to condemn the world, but to save the world through
him. 18Whoever believes in him is not condemned, but
whoever does not believe stands condemned already
because he has not believed in the name of God’s one and
only Son. 19This is the verdict: Light has come into the world,
but men loved darkness instead of light because their deeds
were evil. 20Everyone who does evil hates the light, and will
not come into the light for fear that his deeds will be
exposed. 21But whoever lives by the truth comes into the
light, so that it may be seen plainly that what he has done
has been done through God.”
