Year 11 General Mathematics
Topic - PB1 – Probability – Chapter 8
1 – Introduction and Revision of Main Concepts
8A - The Language of Chance
Descriptive Chance Words
impossible, no chance, unlikely, certain, definite, probably,
possibly, maybe, even chance, 50–50 chance
{Verbally go through Exercise 9A (p250)}
8B - The Sample Space
Definition
The Sample Space of an experiment is the set of all the possible outcomes
Equally Likely Outcomes are outcomes that have exactly the same (equal)
chance of happening.
{Verbally go through Exercise 8B (p251-252)}
8C - Sample Space for Multi-Stage Events
Definition
An Event is an Outcome or a collection of outcomes.
A Multistage Event is made up of simpler events. To analyse, use a list, table or
tree diagram.
Exercise 8C (p254-255)
Q1-7, 9, 10
Q3, 6, 7, 9, 11, 13, 14.

Monday Lesson – Seating plan; go over HW; 8D and 8E. Students to copy out typed on
the screen notes from TK.
8D - Counting the Number of Outcomes (Fundamental Counting Theorem)
Definition -
Outcomes = 4 × 5 × 3 = 60 possibilities.
Exercise 8D (p256)
Q1-7, 10, 13, 15, 17.
Q1, 3, 6, 9, 10, 12, 13, 15, 16, 18, 20*
8E - Estimating Chance
Definitions
Relative Frequency is the probability of an event occurring. It is also called
Experimental Probability.
Exercise 8E (p258)
Q1-5, 7, 9
Q3, 5, 6, 7, 8, 9, 10

8F - Theoretical Probability
Definition
If all possible outcomes are likely, then the Theoretical Probability of an event (E) is:
Number of favourable outcomes
P (E) =
total number of outcomes
(Note: this can be expressed as a fraction, decimal or percentage)
Exercise 8F (p261)
Q1-7, 10
Q4-7, 9-12
Note: Revise/Define Impossible and Certain probabilities (p262)
8G - Highlighting the difference between Experimental and Theoretical Probability
i.e. The larger the sample size of an experiment, the closer the probability is to the
expected (theoretical) probability.
For example, see the Coin and Dice Simulation spreadsheet link below.
