Becoming neighbours: Portuguese culture course
Programme summary
This course focuses a number of significant topics
of Portuguese Culture, especially those related to
his literary and poetic dimension. Its purpose is to
broaden the scope of consideration of our culture
to the area commonly referred to as "thinking",
which is, however, a fluid border with other
dimensions to be mentioned: Heritage,
Architecture, Fine Arts, Cinema, and Music.
Braga and the northern Portugal are famous for its
traditions and culture. With this in mind, the course
includes visits to museums and historical sites to
give context and direct contact with Portuguese
culture.
Objectives
This stimulating course with several field trips
aims to achieve 5 objectives: (1) Knowing about
the times, the facts and the authors of Portuguese
culture. (2) Integrate knowledge of the times, the
facts and the authors of contemporary Portuguese
culture; (3) develop a map of contemporary
Portuguese culture. (4) Get acquainted with the
main aesthetic movements in Portugal;
(5) Develop a lifelong learning, a self-oriented or
autonomous, continuously updating the map of
contemporary artistic culture Portuguese.
Programme day-by-day
DAY 1
- Welcome, icebreakers, personal learning &
action plan, introduction to Portuguese culture.
- Etiquette and Customs in Portugal;
DAY 2
- Medieval Portuguese Culture: Paul Orosius:
Christianity and History; S. Martin of Dume and
the monastic movement in the Iberian Peninsula;
troubadour poetry.
-Field trip
DAY 3
- Renaissance and Catholic Reformation: Friar
Bartholomew of the Martyrs and the Council of
Trent; The Genesis of Modernity in Francisco
Sanches.
- Braga, baroque city.
-Field trip
DAY 4
- Contemporary Portuguese Culture: poetry and
literature movements and authors; Portuguese
music.
-Field trip
Teachers (pre-school, primary, secondary,
vocational, adult, special needs), general public
interested in learning the Portuguese culture.
DAY 5
- Contemporary Portuguese Culture: Film Media,
Performance, and the Arts in the PortugueseSpeaking World.

Tuition fee: 350 € and includes tuition, training
materials and VAT.
Organizational costs: 150 € and includes
administration costs, organizational costs, half-day
excursion and VAT.
About the trainers
António Mendes, M.Sc., is a philosophy teacher and researcher with
a master degree in cognitive linguistics. Professionally he focuses on
teaching philosophy and he is also a researcher at the Philosophical
and Humanistic Study Centre (Catholic University Braga). He is well
familiar with Portuguese thought and culture. He has conducted
research in Portuguese language, contemporary and medieval, and has
published studies about Portuguese authors (philosophy, poetry, rhetoric, literature).
