Management Functions
Management is the process of coordinating the resources (material, human,
and financial) of an organization to accomplish selected aims.
• The planning function includes defining an organization’s goals, setting up
a strategy to achieve these goals, and developing plans to coordinate
activities.
• After goal setting and planning, the second function of management is
organizing, that is, the grouping of resources and activities to accomplish
an organization’s objectives in an efficient and effective manner.
• The leading and motivating functions are concerned with the human
resources within the organization. The former is the process of influencing
people to work toward a common goal and the latter is the process of
providing reasons for people to work in the best interests of the
organization.
• The final function of management is controlling. Controlling is the process
of evaluating and regulating activities to ensure that goals are achieved.

Management Skills
• Effective managers are those who possess certain skills and are
able to use these skills in a number of managerial roles.
• First-line managers-and to a lesser extent, middle managers- need
the technical skills relevant to the activities they manage, in order
to provide guidance and direction to subordinates.
• Conceptual skills allow the manager to see the “big picture” and to
understand how the various parts of an organization or an idea can
fit together.
• Managers must possess interpersonal skills; in other words, to have
the ability to deal effectively with other people.
• Analytic skills come into play with diagnostic skills. Diagnostic skills
refer to a manager’s ability to assess a situation and identify the
causes of a problem while analytic skills provide a manager with the
ability to do it successfully .
