Lab Assignment Title: Blood Glucose
Date: 2017-04-20
Background:
▪
▪
▪
In a properly functioning/healthy body, blood glucose levels are appropriately controlled by secretion of insulin.
This lab was designed to investigate a group of subjects and how each of their bodies reacted after consuming a
food or drink that contained a form of sugar.
All the subject’s blood glucose levels spiked after consuming a form of sugar except the one subject who only
consumed water.
Purpose and Objective:
▪
▪
The purpose of this lab was to observe how the human body reacts after consuming carbohydrates.
Over time, we observed how blood glucose levels spike and came back down over a period of time.
Hypotheses:
▪
▪
▪
We hypothesize that each subject’s blood glucose levels will significantly spike after consuming a form of sugar
except the controlled subject who only consumed water.
A person with a higher BMI will take longer to bring blood glucose levels back down to normal.
Subjects of older age will have a higher blood glucose level right after consuming a form of sugar.
Subjects:
This table lists each female subject and her glucose dosage/form of sugar, age, and BMI.

into the blood glucose meter to read what their blood glucose level was.
Each subject either ate 10 grams of sucrose, 16 grams of candy or 22 grams of Gatorade. The one diabetic
subject drank water.
Each subject then checked their blood glucose level after 20 minutes and recorded the level.
Each subject then checked their blood glucose level after 40 minutes and recorded the level.

Table 1: Consists all of subject’s data including averages for each condition.
Graph 1: Before, 20 minutes post, and 40 minutes post each subject had their blood glucose level taken.
Notice in this graph how one of the subject’s stands out. Subject SA had their blood glucose level drop during
20 minutes post glucose dosage while the remaining subject’s level rose.
Graph 2: A bar graph comparing all the subjects blood glucose level data and the mean.
Graph 3: The linear trendline gives a better understanding of what subjects are above or below the average
blood glucose level. BR had the highest average and MS had the lowest.
Graph 4: A Bar graph shows the mean of every subject’s average blood glucose level. The Linear trendline
gives a better understanding who is above and below the average blood glucose level.
Graph 5: This scatter graph shows the subjects BMI vs. their blood glucose level after 20 minutes. The trendline
shows that the higher or lower a subjects BMi is that it does not affect a great amount of the subjects blood
glucose level.
Graph 6: This scatter graph shows the subjects BMI vs. their blood glucose level after 40 minutes. All subjects
blood glucose level did return to normal. The trendline shows again, that BMI does not play a factor in subjects
blood glucose level.
Graph 7: All non diabetic subjects started at a normal blood glucose level, post 20 minutes all subject’s blood
glucose spiked and post 40 minutes all subjects blood glucose returned to normal. The one subject who was
diabetic started with a normal blood glucose level, post 20 minutes it fell and post 40 minutes spiked a
significant amount.
Graph 8: The subject started off with a normal blood glucose level. Since the subject is type 1 Diabetic and
needs to take insulin after consuming food the subjects blood glucose level decreased. Post 40 minutes the
subject’s blood glucose level returned to normal due to taking the correct amount of insulin for the food
consumed.
Graph 9: The non diabetic subjects blood glucose mean is much lower when starting and post 40 minutes, due
to the fact their body regulates sugar on its own. The diabetic subject has a higher starting blood glucose level
and a highper post 40 minutes due to the fact the subjects body can not regulate sugar on its own.
Graph 10: The scatter graph shows the subjects BMI vs their average blood glucose level. Subjects with a
higher BMI seem to have a lower Blood glucose level than the subject’s with a lower BMI. The linear trend
shows the lower the BMI the higher the blood glucose level
Graph 11: The bar graph shows age vs. blood glucose level. The bar graph shows being older does affect your
blood glucose level.
Analysis and Discussion:
▪
▪
▪
▪
▪
▪
Non diabetic subjects overall have a better blood glucose level.
Non diabetic subjects blood glucose level did exactly what it should do after eating a substance with sugar. The
subjects blood glucose level spiked and then returned to their starting blood glucose level.
The subjects BMI did not have any affect on their blood glucose level.
The subjects age does have an effect on their blood glucose level.
The subject who has diabetes has an overall higher blood glucose level.
The subject who has diabetes their blood glucose level dropped after they ate due to the fact the subject has to
take insulin to counteract the sugar intake. When the subject checked their blood sugar 40 minutes after their
blood glucose was back to normal.

Conclusions / Further Considerations:
●
●
●
It was made very clear that being a non diabetic ones body does exactly what it was suppose to do. Eating a
sugar substance spikes your blood glucose level. When 40 minutes had passed every non diabetic subjects
blood glucose level was back to normal due to the insulin their body produced.
The subject who was diabetic it was made clear that does not happen the same way as a non diabetic. The
subjects blood glucose level dropped very low due to the fact they had to take insulin after eating. When 40
minutes had passed their blood glucose level was finally back at a normal blood glucose level, but was still
higher than all the non diabetics.
The subjects age or BMI did not have any effect on their blood glucose level, before, during or after when they
took their blood glucose level.
