Storm performed in two sessions and certainly knew his audience as he presented segments of songs and music to which members could relate. He performed items from the early 1940s, then switched the theme for those who came to Australia from New Zealand or South Africa. He lived up to his reputation as one of the few entertainers who bases himself at the keyboards. He has performed in 25 countries and been nominated five times for a "Mo' Award". The evening was organised by the bowling club secretary, Ken Shapiro, (pictured right) who took over responsibility when regular social organiser, Dr Abe Cohen, became indisposed. Men present “good luck” chalk to our women’s state playoff team Club chairman, John Rosen and men’s club acting president, Harry Black, presented chalking sprays for all the touchers the women’s No. 2 pennant team will achieve at the (then) upcoming State Playoffs at Woolgoolga, near Coffs Harbour, from July 27-31. The “good luck” chalk was presented to the two skips and thirds during a “send off” luncheon hosted by the women’s club on Tuesday, July 21. Phyl Glasser, the club’s mascot for the upcoming tournament, provided a “good luck” cake, which was cut by the team’s skips, Sonia Davis and Carole Brickman (pictured left). John Rosen presenting the chalk said he was certain that they would be empty by the time the team returned to Double Bay as a result of so many touchers being marked. Double Bay is in Section 1, which includes the powerful St Johns Park Club. The draw puts Double Bay against Wingham in the opening match, followed by a clash against Asquith. On day two it meets Goulburn Railway, and St Johns Park The fifth game on day three is vs Wagga RSL. 2 Rob Clark Len Radomsky Rob Hutchins Winners of Monday Autumn Competition THE team of Rob Clark, Len Radomsky and Rob Hutchins took out the Monday Triples (Autumn) competition with a handy three point margin over the second and third placed opposition. Stars bowlers could attract more players to lawn bowling code A DOUBLE Bay Women’s Club official sees the upcoming 6th Invitation Triples tournament with Australia’s top players competing for a record $9,000 prize pool, as one of the best means of attracting new players to lawn bowls. There is no surer way to attract potential players to the game, than to see professionals in action in all their exciting coloured uniforms playing with bowls of every brand and colour, but most importantly at a very high standard, tournament director, Carole Brickman, suggested this week. Heading the starstudded list is Australia’s No. 1 ranked female bowler, Karen Murphy and her internationally well known Scottish team mate, Kay Moran (pictured left) who will team with 22-yearold Australian representative, Melanie Macaulay (pictured right), who is ranked 45. All three players are from the Cabramatta WBC. Murphy regained her coveted top ranking following a third successive victory at the recent Australian Indoor Championships. She was declared the tournament’s most consistent player in the recent ABC televised Perth International Tournament where she represented Australia in singles, pairs and triples against England, Scotland and Malaysia. INVITATIONAL TEAMS Last year’s winners missing FROM PAGE 6 Surprisingly, the long-shot winners of last year’s event, the Taren Point team of Kim Brough, Norma Brann and Pat Roberts are not defending their “title” this year. However, the team of Belinda Henderson, Lynne Thompson and Louise Witton, from Neutral Bay, which was runner up in 2008 will hope to go one better this time, while two of the Everglades WBC team which took third prize last year, Judy King and skip, Sue O’Connor, are coming again to Double Bay, with Denise Ellison as the lead. Also missing is last year’s top entry which finished fourth, the team of Australian representatives Kelsey Cottrell (currently ranked second to Murphy) and Claire Duke (9th in the 2009 listing) with 2007 Australian Open Triples champion, Margaret Smith playing as her second. A familiar face at Double Bay’s Invitational events is Maria Rigby, who teams this year with Carole McDonald and Double Bay’s talented lead Mary Newin. Another popular player with Double Bay is Merrylands WBC personality, Willow Fong, who has won two gold and three bronze Australian medals, to add to her nine gold, five silver and seven bronze won when representing Fiji. She will skip for Janine Stockham and Elizabeth Lochte. Australia’s third-ranked woman player, Katrina Wright from the Cabramatta Club, is another star attraction in the tournament. She will play as the second for Australia’s 10th ranked player, Carmen Anderson, from the Tweed Heads Club, with Jan Watkins as the lead. Organisers are disappointed that the team of Australia’s fourth ranked player, Sharyn Renshaw, with Anne Johns (19th) and MaryAnn Parcell was a last minute withdrawal. Renshaw and Johns were called up to the NSW team to play against South Australia, but their spot in the tournament was taken by an entry on the waiting list of invitees. 7 ON THE GREEN CAROLE BRICKMAN AND IRIS KAMPEL Fours team set for State finals Mary Newin, Lorraine McLaughlin, Karen Levinson and Pam Stein REPORT BY DEVORAH LEES DOUBLE Bay’s champion fours team will challenge for the State title in September, following wins in Group J playoffs during July. The side of Mary Newin, Lorraine McLaughlin, Karen Levinson and Pam Stein did everything right on Wednesday, July 15, to register an easy 25-5 win over Sylvania at South Coogee Bowling Club. The day before, the foursome defeated the Blakehurst The Double Bay team of Dawn Kelly, Gai Henry, Kay Parnell and team now plays Lorraine York by 22 to 13 in windy conditions which in the State made control difficult to maintain. th Fours Scoring was tight up to the 10 end. The turning point Championship on came when Karen Levinson trailed the jack for Double September Bay to add four shots and take the lead. Blakehurst tried 5 and 6 to make a come back, but Pam Stein played some great at saving shots and conversions to keep her team in front. th St. Johns Park. On the 20 end the Blakehurst skip took out her team’s st shot bowl and on the 21 end Pam nudged the jack back to add a further three shots. 8 ON THE GREEN Triples side blown from state final chance REPORTS BY IRIS KAMPEL THE Double Bay team of Mary Newin, Karen, Levinson and Pam Stein was literally blown from the Group J Triples Championship final when they went down to Blakehurst at Bexley Bowling Club on Friday, July 2. Blakehurst fielded a strong line up of Gai Henry, Kay Parnell and Norma Richardson, who handled the cold, gale-force winds with more accuracy than the Double Bay combination, which the day before had qualified for the group final with a solid win over Engadine. From the first end the Blakehurst team had the measure of the weather conditions and picked up three shots. They retained control to run up the score to 9-0. The Double Bay team played quite well, but even when it held a good position, the opposition played excellent conversions. Individually, Mary outperformed her opposite lead for most of the match, and both Karen and Pam played well, but time and again when holding one or more shots, the opposition converted to add to its shot tally. After 16 ends the score had raced to 22-9 and Pam conceded the match, sending Blakehurst to St Johns Park for the State title on September 7. Better performance in the semi-final match The 19th end produced some excellent bowling from Karen and Pam and the girls made a three. Playing the 20th end at 15-14 there was little between the shots and the jack but, once again tight bowling by the Double Bay girls put a lot of pressure on the Engadine skip and this all helped to bring home another two shots to make the score 17-14 on the last end. Engadine was given the mat and played a long end and when Pam stepped on the mat with her first bowl she was four down. With great confidence, she played through the head producing a match winning bowl to hold the shot. After three goes the Engadine skip was unable to dislodge Pam's bowl allowing Pam to claim the match at 18-14 without having to play her last bowl. In contrast, Double Bay got off to a good start in the Group J semi-final game against the Engadine line up of Heather Abernethy Lyn Cole and Joan Thomas. It was a well fought battle all the way with only one shot separating the teams after the first 10 ends. Mary played very consistently and Karen and her opposite number Lyn played some excellent conversion shots, while both skips were very accurate with their on shots and both played some good saving deliveries, After several more closely fought ends Engadine drew away by four shots to be 10-14. On the 18th end Mary outplayed Heather and put down three good bowls, Karen trailed the jack and Pam added another shot and the score now 12-14. This year’s upcoming event, the sixth in the series, has all the makings of a first class contest with so many of the competitors listed in the top 50 of Australia’s Women’s Bowls rankings. And, with the support of the generous sponsors, there’s the record $9,000 prize bank to be distributed among the winning teams. So it is not surprising that much of the space in this month’s issue of Bay Watch has been devoted to the “feminine side” of Double Bay Bowling Club. As well as coverage of the Invitation Triples, there’s reports of the achievements of the women’s club’s fours team, which has won its way into the State finals, while the triples side made it all the way to the Group final. And there’s the item reporting the farewell and good luck message to the Double Bay women’s No. 3 team which competed at Woolgoolga in the State Flag playoff from July 27. These are results which the men’s club must certainly envy. At the same time it is not surprising that there’s some disquiet as to why the “male side” is seemingly disinterested in sponsoring an open or invitation tournament in the mould of the now gone and forgotten Double Bay Masters, which was one of the most prestigious events staged in Sydney’. None-the-less, there is the notion that the women’s invitation triples, with its cast of high profile combatants, entice more local sportspeople to take up lawn bowls. If ever Double Bay had the opportunity to activate its recruitment program, the women’s effort in bringing to the club Australia’s leading players, couldn’t be a more opportune time. Hopefully, the tournament is blessed with the very best of weather. Everyone associated with the event deserve nothing less. The fact that Australia’s top women bowlers will be at Double Bay has prompted the local weekly Wentworth Courier to show an interest in the upcoming event. The paper sent journalist, Rob Bates, to the club to get the low down from tournament director, Carole Brickman and men’s club chairman, John Rosen. Picture shows Courier photographer, Alan Place, taking images to illustrate the paper’s story. 12
