Newsletter –30th June 2015
Term 2, Week 11
Kia ora koutou
My newsletter this week has a Year 7 flavour to it; the first paragraph has been written
by Abby Griffin and Harley Nissen-Puru and my second paragraph can be attributed to
Theo Mellor (the funny fella) and Ruben Atherton.
Only three more days to go until the holidays!! This is the time to go and “Live the Dream”
and spend time with your family. Anna McNuff has inspired us in Room 10 by running the
length of the country and getting out there exploring the world. Don’t forget to keep fit
and keep your heart pumping by playing sports, outside games or even going for a walk
with the whanau.
On Wednesday last week our wonderful school added more plants to our wildlife pathway.
The senior and middle syndicates buddied up with the juniors and the planting began.
This event is great for our school kinds because it involves all of them: Environmental,
Community, Caring and Achieving. This wonderful annual event has been running for eight
years and this year was the most successful yet. Many thanks must go to Mrs. Green and
Ngaire Tyson for organising this fantastic day.
About week 2 of next term, parents can expect a community survey sent electronically
to them from the Board of Trustees. This is an important process so please take the
time to fill out this survey as the responses you make will help the Board of Trustees to
reflect critically and act on your opinions. There will also be the option to fill out the
survey by hand if you wish.
Also in week 2 of next term is the Senior Science Fair held in the hall. Please support
your children in their endeavours to critically research an investigation through the
holidays; although there is a serious element to these projects, an enormous amount of
fun can be had helping your children overcome the problems involved in this task.
Finally, we have our last assembly for the term on Wednesday afternoon this week at
2.00 p.m. This will be a “bumper” edition of an assembly celebrating many of the term’s
number of achievements and successes. There will be a ukulele performance, a Four Kinds
values slide show and awards, as well as the usual certificates and singing. We would love
to see a great number of parents and family at this assembly so please come along.
Have a wonderful holiday – many thanks to my “guest reporters” from Room 10.

My Book Report
By Thomas Powell
Title Big; Nate Here Goes Nothing
Author; Lincoln Peirce
“Big Nate Is Awesome! Nate’s not only the star of his own comic strip-he’s the
star of his school football team! Will Nate defend his goal and save the day? Or
will Jefferson middle school win…. Again? Find out what happens next!”
If you like to laugh your pants off and have a good time reading books, then this
book is for you. The Big Nate series is a hilarious set of books. They are also good
books for a beginner reader and the reluctant reader. So far there are 16 books
in the Big Nate series. The Big Nate books are usually a quick read. The Big Nate
books are about his troubles in middle school years.
I would give this book 4 and a half stars out of 5. I think this because I believe
that something can never be completely perfect. I think that these books have
everything that a really good book needs. It has comedy, sadness and in my mind
is just plain awesome. This book was good enough that I would read it over and
over again
Club Day 2015
What a fantastic day to have our Annual Club Day. After picking up 25 loaves of fresh bread,
kindly donated by New World Onerahi, we arrived at our home ground in time to see the first rays
of light peeking over the horizon. Mr T and Dee’s dad already have the hangi ready and it’s all
hands on deck. First game up is our newest team, Rippa White vs Hora Hora Mischiefs. It was a
tough game but they all played well. Our youngest little player, Jono Philps had a great game,
tearing through the field to score 2 tries and win the Player of the Day Trophy, and Team Spirit
went to Jax, who was definitely "Ripper of the Day". Next on the field were our Rippa Reds who
played against Marist Green. New Coach Ange Kewene has done wonders with her team and they
took to the field with enthusiasm and confidence and won the crowd over. I’m not sure who won
the actual game but by the smiles on the faces of both teams and supporters it could have been
a draw! Sadly, Rippa Blue’s opposition were inundated with illnesses and injuries so weren’t able
to make the game. However, some of the Blues turned up on the off chance they could get a run
on the field and the remaining Reds, Whites, and some JB1’s came to the party and they all mixed
it up to make 2 teams. From Blues manager Staci: “Manaia Blue boys had a fun game with players
from Rippers Red, White & JB1. Player of the day Cameron Scott - great all round effort Cameron!
Team Spirit & commitment awarded to Thomas McDonald & Jett Wood - Tane the Taniwha was
very impressed with you all!” That’s some Club Spirit right there! After weeks of struggling for
numbers Onerahi were down to 4 players and ready to throw the towel in. But it was Mr T to the
rescue, tracking down Mid Western, who had a Bye, and managed to get a team together for
Onerahi to face our JB1 Marlins. From Mr T: “Marlins paid respect to the passing of Northland
legend Norm Berryman and they did not disappoint. It was a physical game which tested the
Marlins both on attack and defense which won them the game 15-4. Great effort from both
Joshua Laing and Joshua Mitt on defense and defender went to Joel Urban- Hill and attacker of
the day went to Will Burgess whom also won our club raffle so well done to him. We would like to
warmly thank Onerahi and Mid-Western management for agreeing to play us at the last minute
and agreeing that it’s all about our kids having fun playing our national game. The Manaia JB3’s
were next to take the field against the Kamo Magpies. From manager Nicky: A disappointing loss
for JB3 this week but still a well fought game. The grit and determination from the boys didn't
reflect the end result with Peyton Yakas and Cameron Ackers scoring our 2 tries of the day.
Wyatt took player of the day for his steadfastness and persistence through the game with spirit
of the day going to Cameron Ackers. Kapreece Bilski also played a superb game using his quick
movements and speed to gain ground. The whole team played hard and although they were never
winning they never gave up. And finally the JB4 Manaiarahi were ready. Led on the field by ball
boy Te Autahi ‘B’ Niha, both teams stood for a minutes silence in respect of Norm. From the time
the whistle blew to the final whistle it was a full on game with neither side giving an inch. 1 try to
Waipu and Ty answered straight back. Coming back from halftime the score was 7-5 to Waipu but
our boys played their hearts out, coming from behind to give us a well-deserved 15-7 victory
thanks to 2 unanswered tries from Max and Joseph. Huge thanks to Phil Montgomery for stepping
in at the 11th hour as Ref and allowing our kids to play rugby. Special mentions need to go out Paula
& Greg Burgess, our club Treasurers, for all their hard work on the day, Staci P for doing 3 hours
on the stalls, Mr T’s father in law for his awesome hangi skills, Nic Eilering for securing the
fantastic raffle prize, Rudolph Blasting & Painting/Ship Repair for sponsoring the prizes, Tane
the Taniwha as usual doing his thing and getting the kids excited, Mr T for going above and beyond
to make this special day happen, and our friends and family and supporters who come along to
support our kids in the sport they love to play. Finally…our kids. We do this for you. Seeing you
play and enjoy yourselves is its own reward.
Thank you Manaia Juniors
Netball
Manaia Sting had a great game against GJ Gardner Marist Pink. Player of the Day was awarded
to Hollie Morgan for scoring three goals. Thank you to Ian for stepping in to take the team.
Manaia Magic played well against MPE Falcons. Player of the Day was awarded to Lola Eilering for
her great positioning. Well done girls!
Manaia Mystics -A well fought battle on court this week between Manaia Mystics and
Glenbervie. The 1-6 final score did not reflect how even both teams were on the day. Player of
the day was well deserved by Cassie Topper with her quick passing, reading the play and great
defensive skills. A great game to watch and great team work Manaia Mystics. Well done.
Manaia Intermediates - The girls had the best game of the season so far against KIS6. With
coach Justine away the team did her proud putting all the great skills she had taught them into
practice. Looking like it was going to be a draw at 12/12 Issy scored a goal in the last 30 seconds!
We were on the edge of our seats. Player of the day was agreed by all the team as Anika for her
amazing intercepts.
Manaia Ferns played against Kaurihohore and lost 12-3. Player of the day went to Sophie
Kennedy. Well done Sophie!!
Hockey
Parua Bay Manaia had a well deserved rest this week after working really hard to get a 2 all draw
the week before against the tough Maunu Cobalt. Michelle Phillips scored her first goal for the
season and won Player of the day, well done Michelle! The whole team are working really hard
supporting each other, really impressive to watch guys well done!
Parua Bay Above the Lawn played Glenbervie Kiwi. We lost 1/0 It was a well played game despite
not having a full team. Thank you to those who came to fill in! A lot of time was spent near our
goal and although we didn't score Luka was given player of the day for trying.
Parua Bay Fire Hockey -We woz robbed! For the second time in consecutive weeks, Parua Bay
Fire Hockey team managed to put three goals past the opposition in response to their two,
unfortunately in a case of déjà vu two of our goals were disallowed leading to a marginal loss at 2
– 1. Whilst the whole team put in great effort, Toby & Ruben shone through with their excellent
defence and attacking giving the coach/manager a very difficult choice between them for player
of the day, with Toby ultimately taking the honour.
Soccer
Bay Tigers 10th Grade Yellow:The mighty Bay Tigers played yet another exciting game, this
time against Bream Bay. Our brilliant Goalies Maya and Eloise saved many goals, as the opposition
tried hard to keep up, as we scored goal after goal in the first half. The second half saw fewer
goals, but continued teamwork. Goals were scored by Daniel, Hadley, Corey and Jack, and
excellent defence provided by Kerene, Eloise, Maisie and Star.
Result: Tigers Yellow 7- 2 Bream Bay Tomcats Player of the Day: Maya for great goal-keeping
skills . Next game: Yellow at Tikipunga Field J8 at 9:30 against Kamo Storm
Bay Tigers 10th Grade Black: Tired 10th grade sub less Black Team faced a Ten strong
Whangarei FC Team. Despite the opposition having great ball skills, the Tigers put everything into
the game. The play was fast and furious from end to end with even possession for both teams.
Luca scored a beautiful goal early on, but unfortunately couldn't quite make up for the 3 goals
Whangarei had at half time. Thankfully by second half, fresh sub Rocco arrived and gave the
Tigers fresh hope, and a Tiger goal. Sadly Whangarei FC managed to slip in 2 slick goals and then
another 2 just in the last 3 minutes of play. The score didn't show how much heart the Tigers put
into this game, or how strong the ball passing and teamwork was.
Result: Tigers Black 2 - 7 Whangarei FC
Player of Day: William for solid defence.
Next game: Black at Mangakahia 9.30 against Mangakahia Green

Hi my name is Sam Benge I am a local musician and teacher providing lessons in Guitar,
Ukelele, Bass, Keyboard and Drums in school and afterschool. I am passionate about
supporting people to write and record their own music and often hold intensive workshops
in the holidays. I believe providing students with opportunities to perform in the
community is a positive extension of the learning we do together and am always keen to
find events to do so.I am taking another Ukelele orchestra to the NZ Ukelele Festival in
Auckland later this year.If you are interested in hearing more please feel free to contact
